Salamandra longicauda Green, 1818
Holbrook (1838b:111, pl. 26) gave a brief account of the Long-tailed Salamander ( Eurycea longicauda ), with a simple drawing by T.W. Hill. He cited Harlan’s (1835) incorrect subsequent spelling Salamandra longicaudata in synonymy. Holbrook (1842e:61, pl. 19) reprinted a slightly expanded version of this account, with a new illustration by J.H. Richard that is not markedly superior to Hill’s. Similarities in the position of the rear legs suggests the same specimen, or at least the initial illustration, was used as a model. We found no specimens of E. longicauda among Holbrook’s extant collections. Holbrook (1838b, 1842e) described numerous observations of the species from other researchers at various localities, nearly approximating its modern range. Oddly, he did not seem to imply ever having collected it himself or observed it in the wild, despite its abundance in regions he explored, and seemed to describe the same specimen in both editions.
