Type Locality: Colombia, Magdalena Dept., Onaca.

Vernacular Names: Red Crested Soft-furred Spiny-rat.

Distribution: Known only from the type locality in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of NE Colombia.

Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable; rare (known only from two specimens).

Discussion: Taxonomy being revised (Emmons, In Press).
