Syndicus (Semisyndicus) chiangmaianus View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 8 , 13–14 View FIGURES 9 – 14 , 21–24 View FIGURES 21 – 25 , 31 View FIGURES 30 – 33 )

Type material. Holotype: THAILAND: ♂, two labels: " THAILAND: Chieng Mai Province / Doi Inthanon N.P., main road / 2200 m 7.x.1981 / Zool. Museum Copenhagen leg." [white, printed]; " SYNDICUS \ ( SEMISYNDICUS ) \ chiangmaianus m. \ det. P. Jałoszyński, '14 \ HOLOTYPUS " [red, printed] ( ZMUC). Paratype: 1 ♀, same data as holotype, but with yellow " paratypus " label ( ZMUC).

Diagnosis. Male and female: vertex with distinct median longitudinal impression dividing it into convex lateral halves; punctures on pronotum much more distinct than those on frons and vertex; each elytron in anterior third with small but distinct adsutural impression, suture between impressions raised. Male: aedeagus elongate with internal armature bifurcate at apex. Female: Spermatheca spherical with broad funnel-like structure opening at the opposite site in relation to insertion of accessory gland.

Description. BL 2.73 mm. Body of male ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 8 ) strongly convex, slender, dark brown, palpi slightly lighter; vestiture slightly lighter than cuticle.

Head broadest at moderately large, finely faceted eyes, HL 0.48 mm, HW 0.58 mm; tempora in strictly dorsal view regularly rounded and distinctly longer than eyes; vertex strongly transverse and with distinct median longitudinal impression, sides strongly and separately convex; posteromedian longitudinal wrinkle on vertex barely noticeable; frons between prominent supraantennal tubercles flat. Dorsum of head with sparse and fine punctures separated by spaces 3– 4 x their diameters; setae sparse, moderately long, erect. Antennae slightly longer than BL, distinctly thickening distally, AnL 1.40 mm, relative lengths of antennomeres: 1: 0.8: 1.2: 1: 1: 0.9: 0.9: 0.9: 1.1: 1: 1.

Pronotum elongate, broadest near anterior fourth; PL 0.75 mm, PWb 0.53 mm, PWm 0.65 mm; anterior margin convex; sides strongly rounded in anterior half, strongly narrowing toward indistinct constriction located in basal third; pronotal base with transverse row of four small but deep dorsal pits, median pair separated by short longitudinal wrinkle, additionally base of pronotum with very small but distinct pit near each hind angle and vertical sides of pronotum anterior to dorsal pits with one large and one small shallow circular impressions; posterior margin of pronotum shallowly bisinuate. Disc glossy, unevenly covered with sharply marked punctures much more distinct than those on frons and vertex, separated by spaces 1– 4 x their diameters; setae longer, denser and on sides also thicker than those on head, dense and suberect to erect.

Elytra about as convex as pronotum, broadest distinctly anterior to middle and strongly narrowing toward apices, EL 1.50 mm, EW 0.98 mm, EI 1.54; each elytron near suture in anterior third with small oblique impression, suture between impressions distinctly raised; humeral calli distinct, only slightly protruding anteriorly; basal impression on each elytron deep but short; punctures larger but much shallower than those on pronotum, with diffused margins, separated by spaces 1.5– 2 x their diameters, laterally and posteriorly punctures reducing in diameters and becoming gradually sparser; setae similar to those on pronotum but slightly longer and thicker, suberect. Hind wings well developed.

Legs moderately long and slender; dorsal femoral grooves superficial and in basal third of femoral clava indistinct; pro- and mesotibiae nearly straight, metatibiae slightly recurved.

Aedeagus ( Figs. 13–14 View FIGURES 9 – 14 , 21–23 View FIGURES 21 – 25 ) elongate, AeL 0.58 mm; sclerotized structures of endophallus in ventral view elongate and with bifurcate apical part; parameres with numerous but tiny subapical setae.

Female. Externally indistinguishable from male. BL 2.85 mm, HL 0.48 mm, HW 0.58 mm, AnL 1.43 mm; PL 0.80 mm, PWb 0.55 mm, PWm 0.70 mm; EL 1.58 mm, EW 1.05 mm, EI 1.50.

Spermatheca ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 21 – 25 ) spherical, diameter 0.10 mm, with broad opening and long funnel-like structure located on the same axis as insertion of accessory gland.

Distribution ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 30 – 33 ). Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai Province.

Etymology. Locotypical, after the Chiang Mai province of Thailand.

Remarks. The slender body of S. chiangmaianus resembles S. alienus Jałoszyńki, 2004 , S. bhutanensis ( Franz, 1975) , S. gidaphuianus Jałoszyński, 2004 , S. sinensis Jałoszyński, 2004 , and S. schuelkei Jałoszyński, 2011 . All these species have clearly different genitalia and proportions of the body parts.
