Etymology. This species is named for my grandson Evan Michael Webb Wettstone.

Diagnosis. The male of Penniverpa evani is similar to P. chersonesa and is separated from P. chersonesa by the distiphallus in dorsal view ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ) with a broad apicolateral flange and the anterior margin of the dorsal apodeme ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ) emarginate. The female differs from P. chersonesa in having white pubescence ( Fig. 82 View FIGURES 78 – 87 ) posterolaterally on tergites 1–3 and 5–6 and the furca lacking an anterolateral projection.

Description of MALE. Variation (n=10).

Body length 5.5–6.7, 6.1 mm.

Head. Length 0.70–0.86, 0.80 mm. Ocellar tubercle dark brown; setae dark brown, short. Ommatidia of equal size. Frons pubescence white, dense; setae absent. Antenna with scape dark brown, pubescence gray, dense on scape, antenna/head length 0.71–0.80, 0.76; scape length 0.12–0.14, 0.14 mm, width 0.08–0.12, 0.10 mm, length/width 1.2–1.4, 1.4, scape/pedicel length 1.5–1.8, 1.7, scape/flagellum width 0.7–1.2, 1.0, setae dark brown, short; pedicel length 0.07–0.09, 0.08 mm, width 0.09–0.11, 0.10 mm, length/width 0.7–1.0, 0.8; flagellum length 0.34–0.42, 0.39 mm, width 0.10–0.12, 0.11 mm, length/width 3.0–4.2, 3.7, flagellum/scape length 2.4–3.3, 2.9. Maxillary palpus pale brown; length 0.32–0.44, 0.37 mm, width 0.06–0.08, 0.06 mm, length/width 4.3–7.3, 6.1; setae dark brown, elongate. Genal setae white, elongate. Occipital setae white, elongate, absent on dorsal half; macrosetae dark reddish brown in single row extending ventrally from lateral end of postocular setae.

Thorax. Macrosetae 2–3 np, 1–2 sa. Mesonotum brownish gray; vittae dull brown with pubescence gray, often indistinguishable; setae short black, erect to suberect intermixed with white, lanceolate, appressed setae. Pleura with dense gray pubescence, pubescence lighter on anterior fourth of anepimeron; setae white, on propleuron, anepisternum, katepisternum, laterotergite, and scutellum. Wing. Membrane pale brown; veins brown; length 4.7–6.2, 5.7 mm, width 1.8–2.3, 2.1 mm, length/width 2.6–2.9, 2.8 times longer than wide; pterostigma indistinguishable. Halter stalk dark brown, knob yellow. Legs. Coxae dark reddish brown, pubescence white; setae white. Femora dark reddish brown; ventral setae white on fore– and middle femora; av 1– 2:0:1–2, pv 0:0:3–7. Tibiae and tarsi brown.

Abdomen. Orange brown, pubescence white; dorsal setae white, elongate, appressed forming dense band across posterior margin, lateral setae white. Terminalia (MEI 088437). Dark brown. Sternite 8 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), setae dark brown, continuous across posterior margin. Gonocoxite ventral view ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), setae dark brown, macrosetae dark brown across posterior margin; ventral lobe ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), PVL in form of narrow, basal, spinous projection. Gonostylus ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), LGP sinuate, apical macrosetae elongate, VMP absent. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), anterior margin truncate emarginate; ventral apodeme ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), extending slightly beyond anterior margin of dorsal apodeme; distiphallus dorsal view ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ) tapered posteriorly with broad apicolateral flange, ventral view ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ) AAP sinuate with apical spinous projections, lateral view ( Fig 34 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ) tapered posteriorly in broad curved.

FEMALE. Variation (n=3).

Body length 7.3–8.0, 7.7 mm.

Head. Length 0.88–0.90, 0.89 mm. Frons pubescence white, dense; setae dark brown, short on dorsal half. Antenna with scape dark brown, pubescence gray, dense on scape, antenna/head length 0.76–0.83, 0.79; scape length 0.14–0.18, 0.17 mm, width 0.10–0.11, 0.10 mm, length/width 1.4–1.8, 1.6, scape/pedicel length 1.8–2.0, 1.9, scape/flagellum 0.8–1.0, 0.9; pedicel length 0.08–0.10, 0.09 mm, width 0.10–0.11, 0.10 mm, length/width 0.8–1.0, 0.9; flagellum length 0.42–0.48, 0.45 mm, width 0.11–0.12, 0.12 mm, length/width 3.5– 4.4, 3.9, flagellum/scape length 2.3–3.3, 2.8. Maxillary palpus length 0.40–0.46, 0.43 mm, width 0.08 mm, length/width 5.0–5.8, 5.4. Postocular macrosetae scattered.

Thorax. Macrosetae 3 np, 1–2 sa. Wing. Length 6.0–6.3, 6.2 mm, width 2.0–2.2, 2.1 mm length/width 2.9–3.1, 3.0. Halter dark brown. Legs. Anteroventral macrosetae 1–2:0:1–2, pv 0:0:3–6.

Abdomen. Reddish brown ( Fig. 82 View FIGURES 78 – 87 ), pubescence white posterolaterally on tergite 1–3 and 5–6; dorsal setae dark brown short, appressed on reddish brown areas, white, elongate appressed across posterior margin of tergites 1–3. Terminalia (MEI 088479). Furca ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), posterior margin emarginate; length 0.50 mm, width 0.23 mm; anterolateral projection absent.

Distribution. Penniverpa evani is known from Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama ( Fig. 89 View FIGURE 89 )

Habitats and phenology. Penniverpa evani has been collected in January, March, April, May, October, and November.
