Diagnosis. Partly brown and yellow. Head not elongate in lateral view, with antennal base conspicuously reduced. First flagellomere elliptic. Thorax brown with yellow spots. Veins R2+3 and M1, with 10 and 8 intercalated crossveins respectively, associate to one brown spot.
Male. Body length 4.2–6.8 mm. Wing length 4.0– 5.2 mm and width 1.4–1.8 mm. Small, partly brown and yellow ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A).
Head. Not elongate in lateral view; dorsal length 4.0– 4.4 mm and width 5.2–6.2 mm. Frons wide and not clearly separated from fronto-orbital plate; frontal vitta yellow with one median brown stripe from ocellar tubercle, narrowing towards antennal base ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 C). Fronto-orbital plate yellow with brown spots anterior to each pair of fronto-orbital setae; anterior fronto-orbital seta hair-like to inconspicuous and posterior pair equal to inner vertical seta. Postocellar seta large and slightly convergent, length 2.2–2.5 times transverse diameter of ocellar tubercle; inner vertical seta straight and equal to outer vertical seta; outer vertical seta long and divergent, length 80% length of postocellar seta. Posterior margin of head in dorsal view, protuberant at point of insertion of outer vertical seta. Parafacial conspicuously narrow. Face with ventral brown spot. Genal seta hair-like, length 60% length postocellar setae. Postgena very wide and rounded. Occiput conspicuously narrow, almost entirely yellow; height 7.0–8.0 times length ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 D). Antennal base conspicuously reduced; yellow with slight yellow pruinescence dorsally. Antennae length 80% length of head. Scape yellow, dorsally darkened; 0.1–0.2 mm long. Pedicel same color as scape; 0.2 mm long; with outstanding dorso-apical seta; inner process of pedicel linear. First flagellomere elliptic with subtle tightening on distal half; 0.4–0.5 mm long; length, 2.0–2.3 times width. Arista apical and bare.
Thorax. Scutum dorsally with two white pruinescent stripes, separated by wide median brown stripe that widens after transverse suture towards scutellum and fades without reaching the prescutellar margin; pleuron velvety brown with faint bluish reflections and yellow spots. Anterior margin of postpronotal lobe protuberant above postpronotal carina. Posterior notopleural seta length, 80% length of scutellar seta; inserted on small tubercle. Supra-alar seta slightly curved and subequal to postalar seta. Postalar seta straight and half length of scutellar seta. Dorsocentral seta subequal to scutellar seta. Scutellar seta, half length of scutellum. Proepisternum densely pruinescent with ventral brown longitudinal stripe and small anteroventral brown seta. Katepisternum with yellow spot dorsally and dense white pruinescence ventrally; katepisternal seta straight, equal to postalar setae. Katatergite pruinescent and protuberant, same color as pleuron; length 1.6–2.0 times width.
Legs. Fore coxa yellowish-brown with brown spots on anterodorsal, anteroventral and posterodorsal margins. Mid coxa with one lateral seta. Femora yellow with three conspicuous brown rings; mid femur anteriorly with three median setae. Tibiae yellow with distomedial brown ring and dark apex.
Wing ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 E). Veins R2+3 and M1, with 10 and 8 intercalated cross-veins respectively, associate to brown spots. Halter whitish-yellow, with bluish-brown spot at knob base.
Abdomen. Same color as thorax, each tergite with a pair of distinct spots of white pruinescence on anterior margin, which are broadly separated from lateral margin. Syntergite 7+8 subshiny pale yellowish-brown to brown. Epandrium darker than syntergite 7+8.
Female. Similar to male, differs as follows: body length 6.7–7.1 mm ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 B). Wing length 4.2–4.5 mm and width 5.4–6.2 mm. Fore coxa without anterolateral seta. Oviscape brown with two lateral yellow spots and apex yellow; length 1.8–2.3 times maximum width.
Comments. This is among the smallest species of Neriidae (along with Eoneria aczeli Sepúlveda & Carvalho ) and has wings with intercalated cross-veins as E. maldonadoi Aczél , being the only two American species with this particular venation. The general morphology of G. (O.) pluricellatus is quite differentiated from all other neotropical Neriidae , especially with respect to general head shape and uncommon coloration. This species was placed in the genus Glyphidops on the basis of the shape of inner process of pedicel, the antero-apical seta on the fore coxa and the brown, bare arista. Several authors ( Aczél, 1961; Hennig, 1937) have noted that species may belong to an independent genus. It is retained in Glyphidops here pending phylogenetic analysis.
Type material. Holotype: Nerius pluricellatus Schiner, 1868 (♂) “South America ” ( Brazil) [NHM].
Remarks. Neriidae type material collected by Ignaz Rudolph Schiner are deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, and we were unable to access either the material or their photographs.
