3. Chromolaena gentianoides (B.L. Robinson) King & Robinson (1980: 231) View in CoL . Brickellia gentianoides Robinson

( 1923: 42). Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Rio Grande do Sul, 1816–1821, A. de Saint-Hilaire 768, Ca.

2739 (P 00707105 [digital image!]).

= Eupatorium rhinanthaceum var. oinopolepis Malme (1933: 35) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Paraná: Curitiba , 16 March 1909, P. Dusén 8272 (S-R-8980 [digital image!]).

Robinson (1923) cited Saint-Hilaire 768, Cat. C² 2739 as the only examined specimen in his description of Brickellia gentianoides View in CoL , the basionym of C. gentianoides View in CoL . Two specimens in P – P00707105 and P00707106 – bear labels indicating them as type specimens of this species name, both belonging to the collection of Saint-Hilaire mentioned above. There is also a branch in GH indicated as an isotype that was extracted from P00707105. Since apparently neither of the P specimens has ever been indicated as the holotype and the one in GH is a fragment, we designate here P00707105 as a lectotype for B. gentianoides View in CoL . This is due to this specimen being the only numbered as 768 and also because it was the source of the ‘isotype’ in GH.

Malme (1933) cited three collections of Dusén in Curitiba as examined specimens of E. rhinanthaceum var. oinopolepis : Dusén 8272, collected in 16 March 1909, and Dusén 14590 and 14611, collected in 12 March 1914, all of them currently deposited in S. Dusén 8272 is labeled as the holotype, but the information given in the protologue makes it clear that Malme did not distinguish between any of the collections of Dusén. Therefore, we formally designate Dusén 8272 as a lectotype for E. rhinanthaceum var. oinopolepis , mostly due to its being the oldest collection known to have been analyzed by the author of the name.

4. Chromolaena latisquamulosa (Hieronymus) King & Robinson (1970a: 202) . Eupatorium rhinanthaceum var. latisquamulosum Hieronymus (1897: 759) . Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Paraná: Lago, 14 December 1904, P. Dusén 3227 (S-R-8995 [digital image!])

Hieronymus (1897) cited two specimens as examined for E. rhinanthaceum var. latisquamulosum : one unnumbered specimen collected by Sellow in Brazil or Uruguay and Lorentz 457 collected in Misiones, Argentina. None of them was found and given that the main collections of both Sellow and Lorentz were deposited in B, it is strongly suggested that both specimens were lost during the fire of 1943. Malme (1933) cited three specimens (deposited in S) collected by Dusén in Brazil as examined material when recombining E. rhinanthaceum var. latisquamulosum to E. latisquamulosum . We decided to choose one of these three collections as a neotype for E. rhinanthaceum var. latisquamulosum , since they are the oldest collections of this species we could find and are in a very good condition. Specimen Dusén 3227 was judged to be in a better condition than the other two, and it bears a label by R. M. King & H. Robinson indicating it as a “lectoisotype”. As it was the case with E. umbelliforme , there was no indication of date or publication designating the type, so we once again decided to formally designate Dusén 3227 as a neotype for E. rhinanthaceum var. latisquamulosum .

5. Chromolaena ulei (Hieronymus) King & Robinson (1970a: 207) . Eupatorium ulei Hieronymus (1897: 751) . Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Santa Catarina: Campo D’Una to Laguna, March 1889, E. Ule 1150 (HBG 523345 [digital image!])

The original publication of E. ulei cited Ule 1150 as the only specimen analyzed by Hieronymus while describing the species. The holotype was apparently deposited in B and most likely lost during the fire of 1943 (only remains a negative of the sheet in F). There are, however, three specimens bearing labels indicating them as isotypes, and all the information present in these labels is in accordance with the protologue. One of these sheets is in CORD, while the other two are in HBG. We designate here the sheet HBG523345 as a lectotype for E. ulei , since it bears a greater resemblance to the original description of the species.
