Type Locality: New Zealand, Wellington, "killed in Tatai [sic] Bay, Cook's Straits" (= Titai Bay).
Vernacular Names: Hector's Beaked Whale.
Synonyms: Mesoplodon knoxi Hector 1873 .
Distribution: Southern hemisphere: temperate waters.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Data Deficient.
Discussion: Reviewed by J. G. Mead (1989 c). The North Pacific form was found to be a new species, Mesoplodon perrini Dalebout et al., 2002 .
