Synorthocladius conicus ( Freeman) , Freeman & Cranston 1980: 186; Harrison 2004

The species Orthocladius conicus was described by Freeman in 1953 based on a specimen from South Africa. It was transferred to the genus Synorthocladius by Freeman & Cranston (1980) in their catalogue of the Afrotropical Region and listed in this genus by Harrison (2004). However, when we reviewed the original description and figure by Freeman (1953), we found that the species has a hypopygium typical of Bryophaenocladius , especially in the large, broad anal point and wide inferior volsella, whereas in Synorthocladius the anal point is small and the inferior volsella is relatively slender. Thus, we judge the species to be a member of the genus Bryophaenocladius Thienemann.
