Recognition. This species is distinguished from other Japanese species by lacking antero- and posterodorsal bristles on mid and hindlegs, possessing a largely dark scutum, and pair of apical phallic filaments.
Description. Wing length 5.2–5.6 mm. Male. Clothed in blue pruinescence except vertex and scutum brown. Head rounded; compound eyes large, rounded. Face with blue pruinescence, with broad, median brown patch on carina and narrow dorsal stripe; face narrowest just below antennae, greater than width of antennal sockets, lower margin of face with deep cleft and distinct carina; gena one-fifth as wide as height of eye. Ocellar bristles longest among cranial bristles; occiput with 2 pairs of bristles posterior to ocellar triangle; postocular with row of short bristles along margin of eye, upper third darker and stouter than lower bristles. Arista-like stylus long and slender, tapered apically. Palpus clavate, slender, length greater than half height of eye.
Pleura, postpronotal lobe and notopleuron with bright blue pruinescence; posterolateral corner of scutum near postalar ridge, scutellum pale brown; prescutellar depression with narrow band of blue pruiescence along anterior margin of scutellum, rarely extending to posterior dc; scutum faintly bivittate. Thoracic setae long, somewhat shorter than width of eye; acrostichal setulae lacking; 6 pairs dc; 1 pprn; 1 presut spal; 3 npl; 2 psut spal; 1 pal; 1 pair sctl, lacking setulae on disc; several setulae sometimes present on postpronotal lobe and notopleural depression. Laterotergite with patch of pale setae; prothoracic episternum with long pale setae, setae lacking on katepisternum, and hind margins of metepisternum.
Wing narrow, infuscate ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 E); pterostigma very narrow, faint, parallel-sided. Basal costal seta ca. subequal to length of posterior dc. Row of setulae from base of R to tip of R1; cell dm produced somewhat apically; R4 and R5 somewhat curved, parallel except extreme apex divergent. Halter brown with pale base.
Legs greyish, generally darker towards tips, with coxae and trochanters clothed in blue pruinescence. Coxae with long, pale marginal setae. Fore femur ( Figs 17 View FIGURE 17 I, J) with 2 stout anterior setae in horizontal row on apical third; distal half with anteroventral row of short, stout setae, length less than half width of femur, setae more closely approximated near mid-length; proximal half with anteroventral row of pale setulae; 2–6 stout posteroventral setae on apical third; basal half with posteroventral row of ca. 8 widely-spaced, slender setae, some longer than width of femur. Fore tibia with biserial row of short, stout setae beneath. Foreleg tarsomeres with dense, whitish ventral pubescence, length ca. half width of tarsomeres. Mid and hind femora with several pairs of preapical antero- and posteroventral setae; lacking antero- and posterodorsal bristles. Base of hind tibia lacking pair of posterodorsal and anterodorsal setae; anteroventral margin lacking short bristles. Tarsus length longer than corresponding fore tibia, shorter than mid and hind tibiae. Empodium pulvilliform, slightly shorter than claw, longer than half length of tarsomere.
Hypandrium short, oval, slightly longer than epandrium ( Figs 8 View FIGURE 8 A, 9E). Phallus short, not extended beyond apex of clasping cercus, slightly bent at mid-length; apex with anterior, slender sickle-shaped extension enclosing membrane, posterior margin with pair of subapical, curved slender filaments, ca. one-third length of phallus; ejaculatory apodeme nearly straight at apical third. Width of surstylus nearly subequal to width of clasping cercus; anterior margin with pair of teeth-like projections; apically with pair of short, finger-like lobes. Clasping cercus finger-like, parallel-sided with truncate tip; slightly arched; bearing peg-like setae on inner dorsal margin, with small inner basal ridge.
Female. Similar to male except as follows: anteroventral setae of fore femur absent or reduced; posteroventral basal setae less pronounced or absent. Fore tibiae lacking biserial row of erect setae beneath ( Figs 18 View FIGURE 18 I, J). Posterior marginal setae of tergum 7 moderately thick and long, evenly distributed, shorter middorsally; sternum 7 not emarginated posteriorly, bearing moderately thick posterior marginal setae evenly distributed but short and weaker midventrally, no distinct isolated setae posterolaterally; tergum 8 with posterior marginal setae long and weakly curved ventrally, short laterally and middorsally; sternum 8 not emarginated posteriorly, densely clothed with minute pile-like setulae, sparsely clothed with minute setulae on lateral surface; tergite 10 with 25–28 moderately long, thick and apically curved setae, those at apex of tergite not especially thickened, those along lateral margin and basal part somewhat finer; sternite 10 with short setae ( Figs 14 View FIGURE 14 A, C).
Distribution. This species is known only from the northern half of the island of Honshu ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ).
Etymology. The specific epithet “ setigera ” is from the Latin meaning bearing bristles, in reference to pair of long apical phallic filaments.
Remarks. This species appears to be confined to mountainous and subalpine regions.
