26. Senecio nivalis (Kunth) Cuatrecasas (1950: 44) . Culcitium nivale Kunth (1818: 171) .

Type :— ECUADOR. ‘ Crescit inter nives in monte ignimovo Antisanae, qua parte Chussulongum spectat, alt. 2340 hex.’ [ A. J. A. Bonpland 2249] (lectotype: P 00659944 !, designated by Salomón & Freire (2014: 92); isolectotypes F 0076956 F!, F 0BN018146 B!, GH 00012169 !, HAL 0113453 !, P 00659945 !, P 00320241 !). Fig. 15 .

Senecio neeanus Cuatrecasas (1950: 44) , syn. nov. Culcitium neaei Schultz Bipontinus ex Weddell (1855: 140) , non Senecio neaei Candolle 1838 . Type:—‘Amerie. legit cl. Née’ (G 00494284!).

Senecio haenkeanus Cuatrecasas (1950: 44) , syn. nov. Culcitium haenkei Weddell (1856: 139–140) , non Senecio haenkei Candolle (1838: 325) . Type:— PERU. ‘Pérou: Cordillère de Guanoco! [T.] Haenke [s. n.]’ (lectotype: NY 00077378!, designated here; isolectotypes: F F0076807F! fragment, PR 915915!, PR 915917!).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 ): — Senecio nivalis occurs in Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, at elevations of 2700–4500 m.

Notes: — Senecio haenkeanus , S. neeanus and S. nivalis are herbs with linear or linear-lanceolate, densely woolly, solitary capitula. No characters were found to differentiate the three species, and therefore we propose to consider S. haenkeanus and S. neeanus as new synonyms of S. nivalis .

An ITS analysis showed that Senecio neeanus (= Culcitium neaei ) is related to S. canescens ( Pelser et al. 2007) . However, we received the herbarium material used in the ITS analysis, Loza de la Cruz F. 305 (accession number EF538177), which actually corresponds to S. canescens .
