Type:—[ PERU] ‘habitat montosis Peruviae frigidis, frecuentes praesertim in monte Gualgayaoc’ [F.W.H.A. Humboldt & A.J.A. Bonpland s. n.] (holotype: P-Bonpl., not seen). Fig. 6 .

Syntypes:—[ PERU] ‘… Andes de Carabaya, près de S. Antonio! h. 5000 mètr. (Lechler, exsicc., n. 1806); Cordillères de Guanaco (Haenke, d‘après DC.)’ (P, not seen).

Culcitium rufescens Bonpland (1809: 1, t. 66). Senecio rufescens (Bonpland) Cuatrecasas (1950: 45) , nom. illeg., non Senecio rufescens Candolle (1983: 413) . Type:—[ PERU] ‘Habitat in montosis Peruviae frigidis, vulgo Paromos dictis’ [F.W.H.A. Humboldt & A.J.A. Bonpland s. n.] (P 00320242!).

Type:— COLOMBIA. ‘Cordillera Oriental, Departamento de Boyacá; Sierra Nevada del Cocuy o de Güicán, Quebrada de San Paulino, El Morrón, páramo 3800 m alt., J. Cuatrecasas & H. García Barriga , 11 sept 1938 legerunt (nº 1372)’ (holotype: COL 000005384!; isotypes: F 0076853F!, BC 624154 a, b!, US 00122833!).

Senecio canescens (Bonpland) Cuatrecasas var. macrocephalus Cuatrecasas (1951: 36) . Type:—‘ COLOMBIA, Dept. Caldas, Nevado de Santa Isabel arenales 4420 m. alt., collect. J. Cuatrecasas 23208 ’ (lectotype: F 0051291 F! designated here; isolectotype: F 0051290 F!).

Senecio canescens (Bonpland) Cuatrecasas var. ecuadoriensis Cuatrecasas (1951: 37) . Type:—‘ ECUADOR, Monte Pichincha near Quito 4100–4500 m., collect. Hitchcock 21054 ’ (lectotype: NY 00259140 ! designated here; isolectotype: US 01836732!).

Senecio canescens (Bonpland) Cuatrecasas var. elongatus Cuatrecasas (1951: 37) . Type:—‘ ECUADOR, Carchi: Páramo del Angel, 3300– 3800 m. alt., collect. Acosta-Solís 10562 ’ (holotype: F 0076874F!).

Senecio canescens (Bonpland) Cuatrecasas f. magnificus Cuatrecasas (1951: 37) . Type:—‘ ECUADOR, Carchi, Páramo del Angel 12,000 ft., collect. Edward Balls 7337 ’ (holotype: US 1800571!).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 ): — Senecio canescens occurs in the Andes of Colombia to Bolivia, at elevations of 3000–5000 m.

Note: — Cuatrecasas (1951) mentioned in the protologue of Senecio canescens var. ecuadoriensis that its type specimen is Hitchcock 21059 ( NY, US). We were not able to find any material with this number in NY or US ; we found a specimen at NY that corresponds to the protologue ( Mount Pichincha near Quito, 4100–4500 m), with Cuatrecasas’ revision label which indicates that it is an isotype, although with a different number Hitchcock 21054. Therefore, we conclude that there must have been a typographical error, and type collection number is indeed Hitchcock 21054 .
