Type:— COLOMBIA. ‘ Departamento de Nariño, arenales bajo la cumbre del volcán Galeras, junto a Pasto , 5 enero 1941, colect. Miguel De Garganta , nº 205 ’ (lectotype: COL 000004857 !, designated by Calvo & Freire (2016: 120); isolectotypes: COL 000004858 !, F 0076806 F!). Fig. 9 .

Culcitium karstenii Schultz Bipontinus ex Benoist (1948: 305) . Type :—‘ COLOMBIE: pramo Cumbal, prope Pasto, 3800 m, [G. K. W. H.] Karsten [s. n.]’ (lectotype: P 01816956 !, designated by Calvo & Freire (2016: 120); isolectotypes: P 01816957 !; F 0076810 F! fragment).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 ): — Senecio gargantanus occurs in the páramos of southern Colombia, at elevations of 3300–4600 m.

Note: — Senecio gargantanus is very similar to S. puracensis . Both are branched subshrubs with coriaceous leaves, which are revolute at margins. Senecio gargantanus can be differentiated by its narrowly ovate leaves attenuate at the upper part and glabrous adaxially (vs. leaves elliptic-oblong and pubescent throughout in S. puracensis ) and inflorescence composed of usually 2–8 capitula (vs. mostly solitary capitula in S. puracensis ).
