( Figs. 101–106 View FIGURES 101 – 106 )
Neomuscina similata Snyder 1949: 6 View in CoL (key), 33 (description); Snyder 1954: 428 (key); Pont 1972: 51 (catalogue); Linhares 1981: 231 (synanthropy); d’Almeida 1993: 7 –16 (synanthropy); de Carvalho et al. 1993: 59 (catalogue); Couri & de Carvalho 2002: 154 (key); de Carvalho et al. 2002: 107 –114 (synanthropy key); Couri & de Carvalho 2005: 9 (listed); de Carvalho et al. 2005: 97 (catalogue); Couri & de Carvalho 2005: 9 (listed).
Diagnosis: acrostichal 0:1; dorsocentral 2:4; male: intra-alars 2; mid femur with three preapical setae; wing with dark cloud running from Sc to R1; R2+3 with dark cloud on apex; r-m and dm-cu with dark cloud; male: fifth sternite with strong basal projection; female: sternite VIII with spike-like setae.
Color: general body coloration brownish yellow; frons yellow, apex darkened; facialia, parafacialia, gena, antenna and palpus yellow; scutum brownish yellow with four dark stripes of grey pruinosity; median and hind femora apex dark brown; calypters and halter yellow; wing hyaline, with dark cloud running from Sc to R1; R2+3 with dark cloud on apex; r-m and dm-cu with dark cloud.
Male. Length. Body: 6.6–7.1 mm; wing: 6.4–7.0 mm.
Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.12 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 12 pairs of convergent frontal setae; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta large and divergent; inner vertical seta small and convergent; outer vertical seta small and divergent.
Thorax: acrostichal 0:1; dorsocentral 2:4; intra-alars 2; fore tibia with distinct median anterodorsal setae; apex of fore tibia with setae on anterior, posterodorsal and posteroventral surfaces; mid femur with row of setae on ventral surface from base to middle; mid femur with two preapical setae, on posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on anterior, dorsal, posterodorsal, posteroventral, ventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with complete row of dorsal and anteroventral setae, and row of posteroventral setae from base to middle; hind tibia with one median anterodorsal seta and three median anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal, ventral and anteroventral setae at apex; wing with one dorsal and one or two ventral setae at apex of stem vein.
Abdomen: fifth sternite projected at base.
Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 6.0– 6.1 mm; wing: 6.5 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.2 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 10-11 pairs of frontal convergent setae, except for upper two pairs, parallel; ocellar seta large and postocellar seta small, both divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta large and divergent; sternite VIII with spike-like setae; epiproct with four setae, setae in a squareshaped arrangement (2:2).
Comments: as indicated by Snyder (1949), N. similata is quite similar to N. nigricosta , differing mainly in coloration and especially in the dark cloud pattern on the wing, between veins Sc and R1 and R2+3 apex. The males have a fifth sternite projected at the base and the females have a characteristic sternite VIII with spike-like setae.
Holotype (not examined): AMNH. Type-locality: Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
