TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Cape Prov., Colesberg ( Harper, 1940:329) .
DISTRIBUTION: Originally from Transvaal and Natal south to Cape Prov. ( South Africa); now only in captivity, or as reintroduced populations in Lesotho; Swaziland; Orange Free State, Cape Prov., Transvaal and Natal ( South Africa).
SYNONYMS: capensis , connochaetes, operculatus.
COMMENTS: Reviewed by Von Richter (1974, Mammalian Species, 50).
