TYPE LOCALITY: Argentina, Santiagodel Estero, Llajta Manca .
DISTRIBUTION: Gran Chaco of Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix I; IUCN - Vulnerable.
COMMENTS: Originally described from pre-Hispanic and subfossil remains; subsequently discovered alive; see Wetzel et al. (1975), and Wetzel (1977, 1981). Reviewed by Mayer and Wetzel (1986, Mammalian Species, 259).
