Description. Body length 2.41 mm, excluding antennae (mean 14 sp.). Ground colour white or very light blue, with blue pigment on lateral body (all segments), dorsolateral segments Th II to Abd IV, as two not complete stripes wider on posterior tergites, a central patch on Abd II with a truncated cone shape, other central patches on Abd I–II, and transversal bands on posterior tergites Th II—Abd III in many specimens; head with pigment on posterior lateral eyes and a dorsal V-shaped patch; on legs, pigment on distal femur and lateral tibiotarsus; antennae with pigment on Ant I tip and whole Ant II—IV ( Figs 2D View FIGURE 2 –D’’ 4D, 4F).
Head. Eight eyes, GH smaller than EF. Antennae length 1.33 mm, 2.89 times the length of the head (n = 14); Ant IV with apical vesicle bilobed (trilobed in one specimen); relative length of Ant I/II/III/IV = 1/2.05/2.12/2.27. Prelabral chaetae ciliated. Labral papillae apparently with small denticulations or serrations, sometimes lateral papillae smooth ( Fig. 8E View FIGURE 8 ). Lateral process of labial papilla E reaching the papilla end.
Body. Length ratio of Abd IV/III = 4.32 (n = 14). Trochanteral organ with 20–30 chaetae. Tibiotarsus not subsegmented, without smooth chaetae, except for smooth terminal chaeta on legs III. Claw with four teeth: paired at 50% (one of them larger and forward) and first unpaired at 80% from basis; dorsal teeth intermediate between basal claw and lateral teeth ( Fig. 8F View FIGURE 8 ). Empodium lanceolate, with serrated external lamella in leg III from its last middle. Tenent hair clavate. Length of manubrium and dens 0.42 and 0.53 mm, respectively (n = 10). Manubrial plate with 4–6 chaetae and two pseudopores. Mucro with teeth similar in size, mucronal spine reaching tip of subapical tooth ( Fig. 8G View FIGURE 8 ).
Macrochaetotaxy ( Figs 8A–D View FIGURE 8 ). Simplified Mc formula: 3-2(3)-0-3-2/2-4/2-4/1-2-1/0-4-3-2-2. Head: H2 with two or three Mc (A5 and A6, A7 is sometimes absent or as mesochaeta). Mesothorax: area T1 with two Mc (m1 and m 2i); T2 with four Mc (m4, m 4i, a5 and m5). Abdomen: Abd II area A1 with two Mc (a2 and a3), area A2 with four Mc (m3, m3ep, m 3ei and m3ea); Abd III with one Mc each on areas A3 (a1) and A5 (m3), two on A4 (a2 and a3); Abd IV with four Mc on A7 (A3, B3, C1 and E1), three on A8 (A4, B4 and C2a), and two Mc on A9 (A5 and B5) and A10 (A6 and B6).
Ecology. In La Gomera, it has been found on a steep slope with herbaceous vegetation and low scrub and oriented towards the west. In Tenerife, it is common throughout the northern part of the island, over low scrub in areas of almost nude soil, and even in urban areas on the coast, although in the most eastern part of the island it has been found in forested areas ( Pinus ) and in shrubland ( Adenocarpus ), on lichens or in litter and on moss and grass in areas at high altitude near the summit of the Teide volcano.
Etymology. The name comes from the Guanche language and means ‘beautiful’.
Remarks. If the macrochaetotaxy of Abd II and Abd III is considered simultaneously, only seven species of the genus share the presence of the simplified formula for these tergites (2-4 and 1-2-1): E. arvensis Latzel, 1917 , E. kultinalensis Baijal, 1958 , E. mesopotamica Rusek, 1981 , E. palmensis Jordana & Baquero, 2010 . E. rohtangensis Baijal, 1958 sensu Yoshii, 1990 , E. striatella Börner, 1909 , E. tuvinica Jordana, Potapov & Baquero, 2011 along with three new species from the Canary Islands described in this paper ( E. achuteygai sp. nov., E. guacimarae sp. nov. and E. airami sp. nov.) Only E. arvensis , E. palmensis , E. achuteygai sp. nov., E. guacimarae sp. nov. and E. airami sp. nov. share with the new species the formula 2-4 for Th II; the new species can be differentiated from these species by the Mc formula for the Abd IV 0-0-3-2-2 for E. arvensis and 0-2-3-2-2 for E. palmensis , 0-2(3)-3-2-2 for E. achuteygai sp. nov. and E. airimii sp. nov. E. guacimarae (with identical principal chaetotaxy) is separated by five characters, and all are compared in Table 3. The colour pattern and the eye size on E. arvensis are quite different (no colour on Th II and Th III and large eyes on G&H). The colour of E. palmensis is similar but the Mc formula with chaetae on Area A6 of Abd IV is enough to separate the two species. The general colour pattern for this species could be confused with species such as E. multifasciata ( Tullberg, 1871) or the female of E. nigrocincta Denis, 1923 (both of which are present in the Canary Islands), but the Mc formula (included in this paper for the two species) allows the differentiation.
