In the past, authors reported all red-winged Oedipoda specimens as O. miniata ( Frauenfeld 1861, Krauss 1879, Bucchich 1886, Novak 1888, Pungur 1899, Padewieth 1900, Burr 1906, Karny 1907, 1908), probably not being familiar with differences from O. germanica (s.l.). Furthermore, Ramme (1913) assigned O. meridionalis a subspecies status within O. miniata . Identity and distribution of O. miniata are still under discussion (Hochkirch pers. comm.).
