Yarrumia D.J.Galloway View in CoL View at ENA , a new genus in the Lobariaceae ( Peltigerales : Ascomycota)

The first molecular sequences derived from 27 New Zealand species of Pseudocyphellaria ( Thomas et al. 2000, 2002) showed the genus, as then understood, to be heterogeneous resolving into four distinct clades. This

GALLOWAY heterogeneity of Pseudocyphellaria sens lat ., was subsequently confirmed by further molecular studies using a wider geographical range of taxa ( Högnabba et al. 2009; Moncada et al. 2013, 2014). The major clade of whitemedulla taxa comprises what we accept today as Pseudocyphellaria nom . cons., with Ps. crocata as generitype ( Jørgensen & Galloway 2011), with three separate clades of species having a yellow medulla. Two of these have subsequently been assigned to Crocodia , with C. aurata as generitype ( Galloway & Elix 2013), and Podostictina , with P. endochrysoides [= P. compar ] as generitype ( Galloway 1992: 82–83; Moncada et al. 2014). The remaining yellow-medulla clade has two related Australasian species presently named Psedocyphellaria colensoi and P. coronata united by a suite of chemical, morphological and anatomical characters, which strengthen their separation from the other yellow-medulla clades indicated above. Both produce the compound polyporic acid, first unequivocally shown by James Murray (Murray 1952) and confirmed by Chin et al. (1973) who also recorded a new group of tritepenoids for these taxa (stictanes). A new genus to accommodate these two species formerly included in Pseudocyphellaria ( Galloway 1985, 1988, 2007) is described below.

Yarrumia D.J.Galloway , gen. nov. MycoBank No.: MB809030

Thallus foliose, dorsiventral, forming large colonies, 5–20(–40) cm diam.; medulla yellow to orange-red; lower surface with yellow pseudocyphellae and a sparse tomentum; photobiont green, cells rounded, 3–7 µm diam.; internal cephalodia present; apothecia pedicellate; thalline exciple present; hypothecium 45–65 µm thick pale yellow-brown or orange-brown; ascospores ellipsoid, apices rounded or pointed. 1–3-septate, colourless to pale yellow-brown (25–)30–38(–43) × 9–11 µm; pycnidia papillate to punctiform; chemistry with polyporic acid, pigments and stictane tritepenoids.

Etmology: ̶ The genus name is a backward spelling of Murray, and commemorates James Murray (1923–1961) who first detected polyporic acid in the two species comprising the genus, and who contributed so much to New Zealand lichenology, subsequent to his initial interest in the chemistry of Yarrumia coronata View in CoL dating from 1949 (see above).
