Distribution: S California (San Bernardino Co., USA) to C Baja California ( Mexico).

Discussion: Subgenus Neotamias . Regarded by A. H. Howell (1929) as a synonym of merriami ; but see Callahan (1977) who provided evidence of specific distinctness and included davisi and meridionalis in this species. Reviewed by Best and Granai (1994 b, Mammalian Species No. 472).
