Lectotype (Cowley in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 89. 1993): Herb. Clifford: 458, Smilax 1, sheet A (BM-000647490) .

Generitype of Smilax Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 191. 1929).

Current name: Smilax aspera L. View in CoL ( Smilacaceae ).

Note: El-Gadi (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 57: 77. 1978) indicated 1182.1 (LINN) as type, but this is a Kähler collection, not received by Linnaeus until 1757 and not, therefore, original material for the name. Cowley (in Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Smilacaceae : 2. 1989) indicated Clifford material as the type but did not distinguish between the two sheets preserved there; she made a definitive choice in 1993.
