Distribution and habitat: — Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Bolivia at 0– 700 m. Typical lowland plant, found in open spots on wet to waterlogged soils, like swamps and road ditches, also in coastal forests bordering to mangroves.
