status

15. Cyathea tryonorum (Riba) Lellinger (1987 View in CoL [1988]: 94). Alsophila tryonorum Riba (1967: 66) . Trichipteris tryonorum (Riba) Tryon (1970: 46) . Type:— COLOMBIA. Cundinamarca: Cuesta de Fusagasugá, 2540 m, 18 February 1940, J. Cuatrecasas 8036 (holotype US-00066289!, isotypes CM-0110!/-0111!, COL-000006212!/-000006213!).

Distribution and habitat: — Colombia at ca. 1500–2600 m in cool mountain rainforests.

Remarks: — Cyathea tryonorum is only dubitably distinct from the sympatric C. conjugata , on which most reports in and outside Colombia are erroneously based. The isotype at COL comprises an unfurling crozier that is densely covered in long, spreading white hairs; a similar pubescence is found on both sides of the frond axes. In comparison, C. conjugata may also have hairs on the axes and petioles, but is usually glabrescent.
