Two of the seven species are recorded for Ecuador; see Ris (1913a, 1918) and Needham et al. (2014) for identification. Adults are slender and mostly dark ( Fig. 91 View FIGURE 91 ); they perch with wings typically set down and forward over the thorax. They breed in slow streams, mostly in pooled areas, that are either open or mostly shaded.

Note: Meurgey (2011) created the subspecies D. sterilis sterilis and D. sterilis multipunctata . Since the latter is restricted to the lesser Antilles, we simply use D. sterilis for the Ecuador fauna.
