Diagnosis. Face covered with dense punctures. Antenna with 16–17 flagellomeres in both sexes. Mesopleuron polished and covered with dense punctures except for on and below speculum (Fig. 34). Propodeal carinae complete. Metasoma polished and dorsoventrally depressed. Transverse impressions distinct on T I to T IV. T I 0.90–1.00 (in females) or 1.00–1.15 (in males) × as long as maximum width. T II 0.55–0.70 (in females) or 0.62–0.80 (in males) × as long as maximum width. T II and T III covered with large and dense punctures (Fig. 35). Face black except for a pair of longitudinal stripes along inner orbit yellow in females (Fig. 33), entirely yellow (Fig. 36) or sometimes black except for a median spot of face which rarely disappeared and a pair of longitudinal stripes along inner orbit yellow in males. Scutellum largely yellow. Mesopleuron entirely black (Figs 32, 34). Coxae yellow except for hind coxa orange in females (Fig. 32), orange or yellow in males. Hind tibia is banded as “black-white-black” (Fig. 32). Metasoma black except for often posterior part of T I and posterior corners of T II and T III yellow.

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Izuoshima Is., Shikoku, and Kyushu); widely distributed in Palearctic region.
Bionomics. A single hoverfly species, Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer, 1776) , has been recorded as the host in Japan ( Kusigemati, 1986).
Remarks. The female specimens of D. scutatorius from Japan are very similar to the character states of this species proposed by Klopfstein (2014), although the face of some Japanese males have black areas (i.e., black ex- cept for longitudinal yellow stripes along inner orbit and a median yellow spot, but the spot is sometimes absent) (entirely yellow in Western Palearctic species and some Japanese specimens). In this study, we conclude that the variation is intraspecific variation of this species.
