Dohrniphora cognata Borgmeier View in CoL
( Figs 229–234)
Dohrniphora cognata Borgmeier, 1960: 280 View in CoL , fig. 34.
Dohrniphora ventralis Borgmeier & Prado, 1975: 26–27 View in CoL , fig. 47. Brown & Kung, 2007. NEW SYNONYMY.
Holotype. ♂, BRAZIL: Santa Catarina: Nova Teutônia, F. Plaumann [ LACM ENT 240085 About LACM ] ( MZSP; examined).
Species recognition. Neither Borgmeier & Prado (1975) nor Brown & Kung (2007) recognized that Borgmeier’s crudely figured D. cognata was the same as the much better illustrated D. ventralis . This species is easily recognized by the basal group of a few pointed peglike setae, separated from the larger, more distal, triangular group of more rounded-tipped peglike setae.
We consider this to be a varied species, with pleuron color ranging from mostly brown to largely yellow, and the amount of emargination on the ventral margin of the hind femur between the two groups of peglike setae ranging from slight ( Figs 229–230), moderate (231–232), to strong (233–234).
Description. Body length: 2.4–3.1 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae slightly concave. Flagellomere 1 pyriform, brown. Palpus of normal size, brown. Thorax: Scutum brown. Scutellum brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta two-thirds length of posterior seta. Pleuron with anepisternum and proepisternum brown, rest of pleuron light brown. Mean costal length 0.58 wing length, range 0.57–0.6. Halter yellow. Legs light brown. Forecoxa in lateral view yellow. Foretibia with 4–5 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa dark brown. Hind coxa yellow. Hind coxal lobe brown, short, with ventral projection. Posterior face of hind femur with triangular group of peglike setae and more basal, separate group of 3–6 more pointed peglike setae on small protuberance; more apically with shallow depression (see Species Recognition, above) ( Figs 229–234). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 dark brown, tergites 2–6 dark brown. Venter of abdomen brown, with sparse setae. Male terminalia dark brown, except cercus yellow.
Distribution. Costa Rica to Brazil.
