Etymology

This generic name is composed of the prefix Apesh-, an Egyptian turtle-headed god associated with the darkness, and the suffix -emys (Greek), referring to freshwater turtle.

Type locality and horizon

Moghra Oasis, Qattara Depression, Matruh Governorate, northern Egypt. Moghra Formation, early Miocene (Burdigalian) ( Andrews, 1900; Gaffney et al., 2011; PØrez-García et al., 2017).

Distribution

Early Miocene of the Qattara Depression, Egypt.
