Distribution: Peninsular Thailand to Sumatra, Borneo, and adjacent small islands; N Sulawesi. Musser (1987 a) considered the population in Sulawesi as introduced.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Reviewed by Corbet and Hill (1992:289-90). Formerly included baluensis ; but the two are often sympatric ( Payne et al., 1985). Heaney (1978) discussed body size variation in this species. Oshida et al. (1996 b) described chromosomes.
