Silene multicaulis var. ottomanica
Formánek collected plant material in Macedonia during the year 1898 (July− September) for the purpose of writing the Fünfter Beitrag zur Flora von Macedonien ( Formánek 1899), the new variety of Silene multicaulis was described from Flora locality (part of Mt Kožuf; see Formánek 1899: 203). Details on the label of the specimen deposited in PR and designated here as lectotype match the data given by Formánek (l.c.) in the protologue regarding the type locality and the time of the collection.
Not long after Formánek described the new variety of Silene multicaulis, Hayek (1924: 269) considered the new name as a synonym of S. saxifraga , followed by Micevski (1993: 327) in Flora of the Republic of Macedonia. The original material (PR 746281!; Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ) is undoubtedly specimen of S. saxifraga (pers. obs.), which is densely caespitose, with numerous green stems woody at the base, differing from S. multicaulis being laxly caespitose, with only few stems, reddish or purplish near the woody base.
