Type material. Holotype ♂, CHINA: Mt. Diaoluo (18°39΄N, 109°54΄E), Hainan Province, 940 m, 31.v.2007, leg. Zhiwei Zhang & Weichun Li, genitalia slide No. XYL08059.

Paratypes: CHINA: Hainan Province: 3 ♂, 1 ♀, same data as holotype except dated 31.v.−1.vi.2007, genitalia slide Nos. XYL08099m, YLL 10051 m, YLL 10052 m, XYL08060f. Guangdong Province: 2 ♂, Nanling (24°55΄N, 113°00΄E), Shaoguan, 7−14.vii.2007, leg. Min Wang, genitalia slide Nos. YLL10243, YLL10244.

Diagnosis. This new species can be recognized by the forewing dark brown basally and distally; the subtriangular valva having a small digitate basal process on costal margin, its inner surface with a minute subapical process and a minute process at the end of the ventral lobe in the male genitalia. Edosa bicolor sp. nov. is similar to E. hemichrysella Walker, 1866 , but can be distinguished by the yellowish-brown forewing with basal and distal sections dark brown, which is lemon yellow with purple-brown distal section in the latter species. It is also similar to E. lewisella , but the valva lacks a process at about three-quarters the length, which is present in E. lewisella .

Description. Adult ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 20 − 27 ). Wingspan 12.0−15.0 mm. Head yellowish white or dusty yellow. Antenna purplish brown, 0.8× length of forewing; scape with a few dark brown pecten bristles (but denuded in most specimens); flagellum unicolorous. Labial palpus with second segment yellowish brown on inner surface, dark brown on outer surface, third segment blackish brown. Thorax and tegula dark brown. Forewing index 0.3, yellowish brown, basal 1/5 dark brown, distal 1/4 with dark-tipped individual scales forming a bicolored pattern; retinaculum present; cilia yellowish brown. Hindwing yellowish brown tinged with gray; male with a single short, slender, evenly curved frenular bristle, female with two slender bristles, shorter one 0.8× length of longer one; cilia pale grayish brown. Fore and mid legs blackish brown; hind leg yellowish brown, tarsus mixed with dark scales above.

Pregenital abdomen. First tergum without sclerotization. In male, coremata present in eighth segment; eighth sternite 0.3× as long as wide, without caudal process; eighth tergite trapezoidal, 0.75× as long as wide, without caudal process. In female, seventh sternite gently concave on posterior margin.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 − 15 ). Vinculum straight on anterior margin, arcuately concave on posterior margin; medial process absent from ventrocaudal margin. Tegumen as deep as vinculum, gently concave on anterior margin, convex in hillock shape on posterior margin. Uncus with shouldered base touching each other, forming a small membraneous section with tegumen; uncus lobe as long as depth of vinculum, slightly twisted at base, almost straight, separated but slightly linked at middle, broad at base, narrowed to pointed and melanized apex; sclerite absent between uncus lobes. Valva short, subtriangular, narrowed to rounded apex; costal margin almost straight, with a small, digitate basal process curved ventrad; ventral margin convex, with indistinct ventral lobe; basal margin with inconspicuous ‘secondary apodeme’; inner surface with a minute digitate subapical process and a minute process at end of ventral lobe. Juxta angled caudally, flat, 0.25× length of and broader than aedeagus.

Aedeagus as long as valva, slightly curved ventrad, deeply concave at middle basally, tapered from base to middle, distal half tubular, with shallow dorsal emargination. Bulbus ejaculatorius 7.0× length of aedeagus, subdistal section not hypertrophied, distal section expanded.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 14 − 15 ). Ovipositor length 2.2 mm. Eighth tergite funnel-shaped, anteriorly convex into slender triangle, 0.7× length of whole eighth tergite, microtrichiate on posterior 1/5, with sparse setae on posterior 1/3. Eighth sternite microtrichiate on posterior half, posterior margin slightly concave at middle, anterior margin waved in W shape. Ostium at middle of posterior margin of eighth sternite. Antrum very short, cylindrical; ductus bursae 2.0× length of corpus bursae, posterior half narrow, anterior half 2.0× width of posterior half. Colliculum at middle of ductus bursae, comprising three rings: posterior ring narrow and giving rise to a broad, digitate process running anteriorly into second ring; second ring broader than posterior one, oblique, with inception of ductus seminalis dorsally; anterior ring cylindrical, protruding outside, high hat-like. Corpus bursae ovate, with two signa: one zip-fastener-like, comprising more than ten folded, fused plates, and another sole-like, surrounding first one.

Distribution. China (Guangdong, Hainan).

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin bicolor , meaning bicolored, referring to the bicolored forewing pattern.

Remarks. Two females (genitalia slide Nos. YLL11003f, YLL10053f) collected in the same locality but not at the same time as the holotype have the same characters as the one described above except the absence of the solelike signum in the corpus bursae. The presence or absence of the sole-like signum might be an intraspecific variation, which needs further study when more specimens are available. Hence we excluded the two from paratype status in this study.
