Diagnosis

Scatonomus janssensi seems to be closely related to S. viridis viridis and S. mitzae sp. nov., as the three have the clypeal edge with one central emargination, lacking conspicuous teeth ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (g, h, l)). However, S. janssensi is distinguished from these related species by the presence of a strongly upturned and widely margined clypeal edge ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (g) and 4 (g)); dorsal surface of clypeus divided by anteromedian longitudinal carina ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (g), black arrow); posterior portion of clypeus with broad and transverse carina ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (g), white arrow); and pronotal disc densely coated with ocellate and fine punctures ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (e)).

Redescription

Male: Length: 11–12 mm. Dorsum black, with green or yellow reflections ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (g)). Head: surface coarsely punctate ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (g)). Clypeo-genal suture sulcate, almost straight ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (g)). Clypeal margination with dense row of orange setae on dorsal portion. Fronto-clypeal suture inconspicuous between eyes. Anterior clypeal and genal edges with a row of short ventral setae, visible in dorsal view. Ventral portion of clypeus and gena with setose punctures. Ventral clypeal process without transverse carina. Antennal club globose, antennomeres enlarged, with sparse yellow setae. Thorax: surface of pronotum with dense ocellate and fine punctures. Pronotal disc with mid-longitudinal sulcus wider medially, lacking ocellate punctures. Transverse carina of hypomera complete, forming a small tooth at the lateral edge. Anterior portion of hypomera densely coated with setose punctures, setae denser on anterior portion and along the lateral edge; posterior portion with row of setae close to posterior edge. Surface of mesepimeron and mesanepisternum with green reflections, surface finely striate and sparsely coated with short setae. Anterior lobe of metaventrite with well-defined microgranulation. Metaventral disc flat, punctate, with shallow mid-longitudinal sulcus. Lateral lobes of metaventrite with well-defined microgranulation and shallow punctures. Elytra: striae thin, indistinctly punctate; on the disc, striae 3 times narrower than the interstriae. Interstriae surface slightly wrinkled, densely punctate and with well-defined microgranulation. Eighth stria as wide as seventh, both striae absent close to elytral base. Ninth stria finely carinate at the basal one-third, not reaching elytral base. Tenth stria present on basal third of elytra. Legs [ventral surface]: profemora densely puncticulate, slightly wrinkled. Mesofemora and metafemora puncticulate. Posterior half of profemora with setose punctures, setae short. Outer edge of protibiae with 3 teeth; apical and median teeth distinct, separated by U-shaped emargination; basal teeth almost inconspicuous. Outer carina of mesotibiae and metatibiae with indistinct teeth and short setae. Abdomen: posterior half of ventrites II–IV with row of shallow punctures. Pygidium: surface barely shiny, puncticulate, surface between punctures smooth near basal edge. Genital capsule: paramera apex divided into apical and lateral lobes by shallow V-shaped emargination. Apical lobe rounded. Lateral lobe truncate, slightly wider than long ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 (f)). Female: differs from male by having the posterior half of ventrites II–IV lacking punctures. Pygidial disc barely shiny, densely puncticulate, space between punctures with well-defined microgranulation near basal margination.
