Diagnosis
Scatonomus insignis is similar to S. foresti sp. nov. in having the following combination of characters: body length> 13 mm; clypeal edge with two median teeth bounded by lateral emarginations ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (e, f); and dorsum coarsely punctate with dark blue to purple reflections ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (e, f)). However, S. insignis may be distinguished by the clypeal edge widely margined; clypeal median teeth rounded, separated by a V-shaped emargination ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (f)); antennal club densely coated with yellow setae, antennomeres elongate, slightly pointed at apex; clypeal teeth prolonged beyond the remainder clypeal margin ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (f)); pronotal disc densely puncticulate, slightly wrinkled; and elytral interstriae densely punctate.
Redescription
Male: Length: 13–14.5 mm. Dorsum black, with dark blue or purple reflections ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (f)). Head: surface wrinkled and densely punctate; punctures less impressed near anterior edge ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (f)). Clypeo-genal suture straight, finely sulcate. Fronto-clypeal suture inconspicuous between eyes. Anterior clypeal edge with a row of dorsal orange setae. Clypeus transversely elevated posteriorly. Ventral surface of clypeus densely setose; setae near the anterior edge visible in dorsal view. Ventral clypeal process produced into a transverse and arched carina. Thorax: pronotum with an anteromedian knob and a pair of shallow impressions positioned more posteriorly to the knob. Pronotal disc densely puncticulate; mid-longitudinal sulcus present on posterior half. Transverse carina of hypomera incomplete, not reaching the lateral edge. Posterior portion of hypomera finely striate, bearing sparse setae along lateral edge. Surface of mesepimeron and mesanepisternum with green reflections, finely striate and shallowly punctate. Anterior lobe of metaventrite smooth. Lateral lobes of metaventrite finely striate and sparsely punctate. Metaventral disc slightly convex, punctate, with shallow mid-longitudinal sulcus posteriorly. Elytra: striae thin, shallow, indistinctly punctate; width of striae on disc at least 10 times narrower than third interstria. Lateral edge of striae slightly carinate. Seventh and eighth striae absent at the basal one-fifth of elytra. Ninth stria carinate on its apical half and narrowly sulcate on remaining parts. Legs [ventral surface]: profemora puncticulate; posterior portion with setose punctures, setae long. Outer edge of protibiae with 2 distinct teeth separated by deep Ushaped emargination; basal tooth inconspicuous. Outer edge of mesotibiae and metatibiae with a distinct row of small teeth. Inner edge of mesotibiae and metatibiae carinate, eventually with few setae on apical third. Abdomen: ventrites II–IV with a row of coarse punctures along posterior portion. Ventrite V slightly shorter than VI at medial portion. Pygidium: disc sparsely puncticulate. Genital capsule: paramera apex divided into apical and lateral lobes by shallow V-shaped emargination. Apical lobe rounded. Lateral lobe truncate, approximately as wide as long; vertical portion of the edge slightly curved inward medially ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 (e)). Female: differs from male by having the ventral surface of ventrites II–IV with microgranulation on posterior portion, ventrites V–VI sparsely punctate. Disc of pygidium densely puncticulate.
