Diagnosis

Scatonomus fasciculatus and S. barbatus are closely related. Both species have body longer than 9 mm; dorsal surface shiny, almost smooth; genal edge not distinctly angulate laterally ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (a, d)); and clypeal edge bidentate, with deep lateral emarginations filled with a tuft of long setae ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (a, d)). However, S. fasciculatus can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: clypeal median teeth elongated, approximately as long as the lateral tuft of setae ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d)); anterior edge of gena slightly straight ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d), arrow); and dorsum with blue or purple reflections ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (d)).

Redescription

Male: length: 9–13 mm. Dorsum with black, blue or purple reflections ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (d)). Head: densely punctate, slightly wrinkled medially ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d)). Anterior and posterior edges narrowly margined. Clypeo-genal and clypeo-frontal sutures carinate, arched. Clypeal median teeth upturned, separated by U-shaped emargination ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d)). Anterior portion of clypeus strongly concave medially, surface less punctate than remaining portions of head. Clypeal and genal edges with rows of long erect setae. Antennal club globose, densely coated with long setae. Thorax: pronotum shiny, puncticulate, slightly wrinkled. Anteromedian portion of pronotal disc longitudinally wrinkled, and with welldefined microgranulation. Mid-longitudinal sulcus feebly impressed on pronotal disc. Transverse carina of hypomera almost complete, not reaching lateral edge. Anterior portion of hypomera with dense long setae; lateral edge with row of coarse setose punctures, setae short. Surface of mesepimeron filled with dense and fine striae. Surface of mesanepisternum with well-defined microgranulation. Anterior and lateral lobes of metaventrite with well-defined microgranulation, lacking shallow punctures. Disc flat, densely puncticulate. Elytra: striae thin, shallow, indistinctly punctate; width of striae on disc 7 times narrower than the third interstria. Seventh and eighth striae effaced or absent at elytral base. Ninth stria present, weakly impressed at elytral base. Tenth stria inconspicuous. Interstriae plane, shiny, densely punctate, slightly wrinkled. Legs [ventral surface]: profemora densely punctate, surface between punctures smooth. Mesofemora and metafemor sparsely punctate. Outer edge of protibia with 3 distinct teeth separated by deep U-shaped emarginations. Outer edge of mesotibiae and metatibiae with row of short setae and small teeth. Abdomen: posterior half of abdominal ventrites II–VI convex at transverse midline. Ventrite V slightly depressed medially, as long as ventrite VI. Pygidium: 1/3 wider than long. Surface shiny, with punctures spaced by 2 times their diameter. Genital capsule: paramera apex divided into apical and lateral lobes by deep Lshaped emargination. Apical lobe rounded; lateral lobe slightly acute ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 (c)). Female: differs from male by the abdominal ventrite VI twice longer than V. Disc of pygidium with punctures spaced by 2 times their diameter; apical edge of pygidium slightly angulate.
