Scatonomus thalassinus Waterhouse, 1891: 350 View in CoL .
Diagnosis
Scatonomus thalassinus resembles S. insignis and S. mitzae sp. nov. in having clypeal edge with 3 emarginations ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (f, h, j, k)) and dorsum with coarse punctures ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (f, h, j, k)). However, S. thalassinus is distinguished from these two species by the dorsum with green metallic colouration ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (j, k)); clypeal edge moderately margined with median teeth acute, separated by a deep V-shaped emargination (some specimens have clypeal edge widely margined with margination produced into 4 rounded teeth, separated by Ushaped emarginations; see taxonomic remarks) ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (j, k); abdominal ventrites II–IV usually with a row of wrinkles on posterior edge ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (i)).
Redescription
Male: Length: 10–13 mm. Dorsum metallic green, usually with red or yellow reflections on head and pronotum ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (j, k)). Head: dorsal surface barely shiny, with dense coarse punctures, except on anterior portion of clypeus with sparse punctures. Fronto-clypeal junction smooth medially ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (j, k)). Clypeal edge distinctly margined ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (j, k)). Clypeo-genal suture sulcate, slightly curved outward on posterior half. Ventral clypeal process transverse, produced into an arched carina. Anterior clypeal and genal edges with a row of ventral setae, visible in dorsal view. Thorax: pronotal disc coarsely punctate, lacking wrinkles; mid-longitudinal sulcus smooth, broader medially. Transverse carina of hypomera incomplete, not reaching lateral edge. Anterior portion of hypomera finely striate, with erect yellow setae; setae on lateral edge visible in dorsal view. Posterior portion of hypomera smooth. Lateral edge of hypomera with sparse setae. Surface of mesepimeron and mesanepisternum coarsely punctate, slightly microsculptured. Surface of disc and anterior lobe of metaventrite shallowly punctate; lateral lobes with ill-defined microgranulation and sparse coarse punctures. Elytra: striae thin, ill-impressed, inconspicuously punctate; on disc at least 10 times narrower than third interstria. Lateral edges of striae finely carinate. Seventh and eighth striae absent on basal one-fifth of elytra. Eighth stria carinate. Ninth stria visible only at the posterior half of elytra. Tenth stria absent. Interstriae shiny, filled with dense shallow punctures; in some individuals interstriae barely shiny with well-defined microgranulation. Legs [ventral surface]: profemora puncticulate. Posterior edge of profemora with setose punctures near trochanter. Meso- and metafemora finely punctate. Outer edge of protibiae with 3 teeth, apical and median teeth well developed, separated by a deep U-shaped emargination; basal teeth small, separated from median tooth by shallow V-shaped emargination. Outer edge of meso- and metatibiae with row of small teeth on basal two-thirds; apical third carinate. Inner edge of meso- and metatibiae carinate, except by the apical third. Abdomen: ventrite V approximately 2 times shorter than ventrites II–IV and VI at medial portion. Ventrites V–VI flat medially. Ventrites II–IV wrinkled on posterior edge. Pygidium: surface barely shiny, with sparse punctures and well-defined microgranulation. Genital capsule: paramera apex divided into apical and lateral lobes by shallow V-shaped emargination. Apical lobe rounded. Lateral lobe widely rounded ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 (h)). Female: differs from the male by abdominal ventrites II–IV only finely punctate on posterior half, and ventrites V–VI convex medially.
