Sennius aequinoctialis ( Fåhraeus, 1839) , comb n.

Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839: 24 (description, distribution); Pic, 1913: 13 (catalog).

Acanthoscelides aequinoctialis: Blackwelder, 1946: 758 (combination, catalog); Gemminger & Harold, 1873: 3219 (catalog); Wendt, 1978: 35 (type depository); Udayagiri & Wadhi, 1989: 35 (catalog).

Type material (5, NHRS): Lectotype male with labels: “237” “Colum / bia” “Coll. Chevrol” “ Paratypus ” “ Lectotype / Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839 / design. J. H. Viana”. Four paralectotypes with labels: 1, “ Typus ” “ Br. aequinoctialis / Carthag. Colum / bia. Dejean” “ Paralectotype / Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839 / J. H. Viana”; 1, “ Paratypus ” “ Br. aequinoctialis / Carthagene Co / lumbia. Dej” “ Paralectotype / Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839 / J. H. Viana”; 1, “237” “(preto)” “Colum / bia” “ Paratypus ” “Coll. Chevrol” “ Bruchus / aequinoctialis Dej <illegible letters> 2231. / Sch <illegible letters> C. v p 24, type / aquilas Chr Oliver / Columbia / Carthagene <illegible letters> L. Sebas” “ Paralectotype / Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839 / J. H. Viana”; 1, “<illegible letters>” “Colum / bia” “Coll. Chevrol” “ Paralectotype / Bruchus aequinoctialis Fåhraeus, 1839 / J. H. Viana”.

Remarks. In the original description, Fåhraeus (1839) did not quote the number of studied specimens. Five specimens were received from NHRS, three labeled with the same data as in the original description, “Carthagenam – Columbiae” and “Coll. Chevrol”, one specimen with labels “Colum / bia” “Coll. Chevrol” and one specimen with the "Columbia" label and with a numbered old label (“237”) corresponding to the numbered label in a specimen with "Carthagenam—Columbiae" label. Therefore, the best preserved male specimen is here designated as the lectotype. In this study, Bruchus aequinoctialis is transferred to Sennius , as Sennius aequinoctialis ( NEW COMBINATION), due mainly by the presence of the hind femur with one tooth at the inner ventral margin and hinge sclerites in the internal sac of the male genitalia.
