Tropidauchen iranicum Werner, 1939 syn. nov.

Remarks. Werner (1939) described T. iranicum after 1 male and 2 females from Iran. But this paper and all the described taxa in it have been overlooked by researchers for a long time ( Mistshenko 1951b; Bey-Bienko & Mistshenko 1951; Dirsh 1952; Mirzayans 1959; Shumakov 1963; Presa & Garcia 1983; Otte 1994). Dirsh identified two syntypes of T. iranicum as T. cultricolle and one of its females as Tropidauchen sp. in 1953, after his revision on this group (Dirsh 1952). While the only male and one female have blue hind tibia with yellow inner spines, the other female has light blue (slightly pinkish) with reddish inner spines. However, they all belong to the same taxon. On the other hand these specimens strongly agree with S. cultricolle . Therefore I agree with Dirsh’s identification of two syntypes and consider both taxa synonyms.

The characters of species of this genus are quite variable even in the same habitat, and the genus should be reviewed considering also the geographical distribution. Although the only male and one female were labelled as “ typus ” and “ paratypus ” respectively in the NMW, these were not reported in a publication, thus the type series is still syntypic. The only female, labelled as “ typus ” is designated here as lectotype for the junior synonym, Saxetania iranicum ( Werner, 1939) .
