Note: Nuttall (1916) redescribed a female of Ixodes caledonicus , stressing morphological differences with the original description in Nuttall (1910). Morel and Aeschlimann (1983) underscore the difficulties involved in morphologically separating Ixodes caledonicus , Ixodes berlesei and Ixodes semenovi (under the genus Scaphixodes ) and treat the diagnosis of Ixodes caledonicus from Switzerland as provisional. Sénevet (1937) did not recognize the male of Ixodes caledonicus described in Nuttall (1911) and presented a sketch of the female that is quite different from figures published by other authors. A comparative morphological study of types and specimens from different populations of Ixodes caledonicus may help in correctly identifying this species, while molecular studies will be needed to support the presumed conspecificity of tick populations. There are descriptions of Ixodes caledonicus under the name Scaphixodes caledonicus that are not included in the above lists. See also Ixodes berlesei for its confusion with Ixodes caledonicus .
