6. Amblyomma arcanum Karsch, 1879b .

An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Squamata : Varanidae , and nymphs have also been collected from this type of host; adults alone have been recovered from Crocodilia: Crocodylidae , Rodentia : Anomaluridae , Chiroptera : Pteropodidae , and Pholidota : Manidae . There are no records of Amblyomma arcanum causing human parasitism.

Note: Theiler (1945a), Kaufman (1972) and Kolonin (2009), all under the name Aponomma arcanum , consider this tick a synonym of Amblyomma exornatum ; nevertheless, Guglielmone et al. (2014, 2015, 2017) treat Amblyomma arcanum as provisionally valid, pending type comparison with Amblyomma exornatum . Santos Dias (1993), using the genus name Aponomma , and others, defends the validity of Amblyomma arcanum but stresses the difficulties involved in differentiating it from Amblyomma exornatum and Amblyomma flavomaculatum .
