Dodomeira enzoi Bellò View in CoL & Baviera sp. n.
( Figures 5, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 5f View FIGURES 5 – 5 , 40e View FIGURES 40 , 64 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 103 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily, Palermo, Corleone, Ficuzza ( Fig. 146).
Diagnosis. A medium-size species (3.80–4.00 mm) belonging to the adrianae group with short sub-parallel elytra (length: 2.30–2.50, width: 1.40–1.52, ratio: 1.63–1.64) and body shape sub-cylindrical. Within the species group, it is recognisable by vertex slightly convex and twice as wide of mesorostrum between antennae (ratio: 1.95–2.00), spherical eyes scarcely protruding from outline of head, elytral declivity with setae clavate or much widened at apex and recumbent or raised (15°–45°). Pronotum quite sub-square (length: 0.85–0.90 mm, width: 0.90–0.95 mm, ratio 0.94–0.95). Elytra slightly convex dorsally, clothed by imbricate brown-silvery scales and short silvery setae.
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “Corleone, (PA) [Palermo], Ficuzza, 22. XI. [19]’90, leg. Bellò” // [white, printed] “vaglio sotto Quercus sp. + misto”; [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira enzoi sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE).
Paratypes. 2 females: “Corleone, (PA) [Palermo], Ficuzza, vaglio sotto Quercus sp. + misto, 22. XI. [19] ’90, leg. Bellò” (CBE, ECO); 2 females: “Corleone, (PA) [Palermo], Ficuzza, sotto Rubus sp. + misto, 22. XI. [19] ’90, leg. Pierotti” (HPI); 2 females: I, Sicilia, Palermo, Ficuzza, Laghetti Coda Riccio, 850m, 37°52’29.N 13°23’51.E, vaglio Quercus + Rubus , legg. Bellò & Baviera (CBE, CBA); 1 female “Sicilia, Ficuzza, 19/27. V. 1908, A. Dodero” (MSNG).
Holotype. Female. Length: 4.00 mm. Body slender, elytra subparallel to the sides. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate brown-silvery scales and silvery setae clavate or spatulate, recumbent or raised (angle with elytral surface 15°–45°). Rostrum very transverse and sub-conical to the sides, pterygia obvious, epistome absent, mesorostrum quite flat. Interocular space without visible fovea. Vertex slightly convex, twice as wide as mesorostrum between antennae (ratio: 1.95) with setae widened and raised. Lateral and spherical eyes slight bulging. Antenna quite robust and quite short with long, raised, golden, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.75 (scape length: 0.75 mm, funicle length: 1.00 mm). Scape clubbed slightly more robust than funicle, curved at the middle and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 10.6.4.4.4.4.4.15; segments 1–4 with clavate setae; segments 3–7 pearl-shaped. Club at least twice wider than funicle, fusiform, compact but with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum quite sub-square (length: 0.90 mm, width: 0.95 mm, ratio 0.95) with maximum width at the basal third and as wide at base of its anterior margin, sides sinuate, disc with punctures usually hidden by scales.
Elytra slender (length: 2.55 mm, width: 1.55 mm, ratio 1.64), subcylindrical, disc quite convex, humeri short and rounded. Elytral striae inconspicuous, catenulate, interstriae feebly vaulted.
Legs short and robust clothed by silvery-golden scales and rather short, elongate-clavate silvery-golden setae. Femora little clubbed. Protibia with three acute spines on inner edge, with evident mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia quite sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, quite robust and quite short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 103 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ).
Genitalia were examined in five specimens.
Paratype variability. All paratypes are females and differs only in size.
Distribution. See Fig. 139. Italian endemic. Known around Ficuzza type locality.
Etymology. This species named after our friend and colleague Enzo Colonnelli, the eminent Italian specialist weevils, in appreciation of his extraordinary scientific and human availability.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting under Rubus sp. and Quercus sp. leaf-litter on a slope calcareous in November and December, at 800–1000 meters.
Collections in spring and summer months gave negative results suggesting that the Dodomeira enzoi are absent during this time.
Main soil type. Chromic-Cambisol ( Rendzina ) (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known from seven females.
Chorological relationships. Sympatric with Pseudomeira erinacea Bellò & Baviera (2011) and Typhloreicheia baudii (Ragusa, 1883) .
