Dodomeira caoduroi Bellò View in CoL & Baviera sp. n.
( Figures 14, 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e, 14f View FIGURES 14 – 14 , 41f View FIGURES 41 , 73 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 112 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily, Trapani, Alcamo, monte Bonifato ( Fig. 155).
Diagnosis. A relatively large size species (4.00– 4.20 mm) belonging to the caoduroi group with slender, subparallel elytra and sub-cylindrical body shaped. Within the species group, it is easily recognisable by the elytra more slender (length: 2.60–2.75 mm, width: 1.45–1.50 mm, ratio 1.72/1.78) and pronotum quite sub-square (length: 0.90– 0.90 mm, width: 0.90–0.95 mm, ratio 0.90–0.95). Elytra vaulted dorsally, clothed by imbricate brownish-silvery scales and elongate golden setae clavate or widened, curved, recumbent (angle with elytral surface 15°–35°) and rather catenulate.
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “ Sicilia, Trapani, Alcamo, Monte Bonifato 4° sito, 320m, vaglio Olea , 03.IV.2011, leg. Bellò C.” // [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira caoduroi sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE).
Paratypes. 1 female: “ Alcamo, TP [Trapani], M. [onte] Bonifato , m 430, 18. IV. [20] ’06, leg. Pierotti ” ( HPI) ; 1 female: “I, Sicilia, TP[Trapani], Alcamo, m. [on] te Bonifato, S. [an] Nicolò , 207 m., vaglio Olea , 22. IV. 2010, N 37°56.005’ E 012°56.976’, leg. Bellò ” ( CBE) GoogleMaps .
Types are three (all females).
Holotype. Female. Total length: 4.20 mm. Body shape slender and subcylindrical. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate, brownish-silvery scales with metallic sheen. Short, flattened or recumbent, widened or clavate setae on pronotum as on elytra (angle with elytral surface 15°–35°).
Rostrum covered by brownish-silvery scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.65), sub-parallel to the sides. Pterygia inconspicuous. Epistome present, concave with raised plate. Mesorostrum concave, anteriorly with eight/ ten thin, curved semi-erect setae. Vertex convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.70) with short, widened, raised setae. Interocular space without visible fovea.
Lateral, relatively small, slightly spherical eyes not protruding from outline of head. Antenna quite robust and short with recumbent, golden, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.80 (scape length: 0.72 mm, funicle length: 1.10 mm). Scape clubbed, slightly more robust than funicle, curved at the basal third and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 12.6.5.4.4.4.4.15; first three/four segments with clavate-widened setae; segments 4–7 pearl-shaped. Club at least twice wider than funicle, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with brownish-silvery scales, quite sub-square (length: 0.90 mm, width: 1.00 mm, ratio: 0.90), slightly sub-hexagonal, rounded at the sides, wider in the middle, with short, widened-clavate, golden raised setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum inconspicuous.
Elytra (length: 2.75 mm, width: 1.60 mm, ratio: 1.72) vaulted dorsally, sub-parallel, covered by brownishsilvery scales, with flat suture, strongly rounded on sides, wider at the middle. Humeri short and rounded. Punctation of striae, shallow, rather catenulate and impressed. Interstriae flat, with clavate, short, golden, recumbent setae.
Legs short and robust covered by silvery scales and with short, clavate, silvery setae. Femora clubbed. Protibia with three acute spines on inner edge, with mucro evident on inner apical angle. Protibia not sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, robust and quite short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in one specimens.
Paratype variability. The specimens (all females) differ elytra length/width ratio: 1.72–1.78.
Distribution. See Fig. 140 View FIGURE 140 . Italian endemic. Known only from Bonifato Mount near the type locality (Alcamo).
Etymology. This species named after Caoduro (Gianfranco), our friend naturalist and honorary President of the World Biodiversity Association, in appreciation of its continued commitment to the conservation of biodiversity.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting the leaf litter on clay soil, of an olive grove in spring, at 200–500 meters.
Collections in the other seasons gave negative results.
Main soil type. Vertic-Cambisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known from three females.
Chorological relationships. Sympatric with Dolichomeira sp.and Pseudomeira sp.
