Dodomeira hiemalis Bellò View in CoL & Baviera sp. n.
( Figures 7, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 7f View FIGURES 7 – 7 , 40g View FIGURES 40 , 66 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 105 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily, Caltanisetta, Mazzarino (Fig. 148).
Diagnosis. A small-size species (3.50–3.75 mm) belonging to the adrianae group with short sub-parallel elytra (length: 2.30–2.40 mm, width: 1.40–1.50 mm, ratio: 1.63–1.64) and body shape sub-cylindrical. Within the species group, it is recognisable by mesorostrum with clavate setae, pronotum transverse (length: 0.75–0.85 mm, width: 0.85–0.95 mm, ratio 0.88–0.90) and elytral declivity with recumbent setae (15°–30°). Elytra slightly convex dorsally, clothed by imbricate silvery-brown scales and with short silvery setae clavate or spatulate.
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF; [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “I, Sicilia, CL [Caltanisetta], strada da Mazzarino a San Cono, 485m, vaglio Olea , 10 XII 2014, Bellò & Baviera legg.” // [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira hiemalis sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE).
Paratypes. 1 female: I, Sicilia, CL [Caltanisetta], Mazzarino, 475 m, vaglio Olea , 37°18.746’ E 014°13.440’, 2.III.2013, N legg. Bellò & Chemello ( CBE); 1 female: I, Sicilia, CL, Mazzarino, 420 m, vaglio Olea , 3.III.2012, N 37°18.180’ E 014°11.126’, legg. Bellò & Chemello ( CBE); 1 female: I, Sicilia, CL, strada da Mazzarino a San Cono, 485m, vaglio Olea , 10 XII 2014, Bellò & Baviera legg. ( CBA).
Holotype. Female. Total length: 3.75 mm. Body shape slender and subcylindrical. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate silvery-golden scales with metallic sheen. Short, recumbent or raised, clavate or spatulate setae on pronotum as on elytra (angle with elytral surface 15°–45°).
Rostrum covered by golden silvery scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.60), sub-parallel to the sides. Pterygia evident. Epistome absent. Mesorostrum slightly concave, anteriorly with about eight thin, curved, semierect setae. Vertex convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.75) with clavate setae. Interocular space without visible fovea. Lateral and spherical eyes protruding from outline of head. Antenna robust and quite short with long, recumbent, silvery, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.70 (scape length: 0.70 mm, funicle length: 1.00 mm). Scape clubbed, slightly more robust than funicle, curved at the middle. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 10.6.5.4.4.4.4.15; segments 1–4 with clavate and 5–7 widened setae; segments 4–7 pearl-shaped. Club at least twice wider than funicle, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with golden silvery scales, transverse (length: 0.85 mm, width: 0.95 mm, ratio: 0.90), slightly sub-hexagonal, sinuate at the sides, wider in the middle with clavate, golden silvery recumbent setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum not visible.
Elytra convex, covered by golden silvery scales, sub-cylindrical with suture quite flat (length: 2.40 mm, width: 1.50 mm, ratio: 1.64), wider at the middle. Humeri short and rounded. Elytral declivity with recumbent setae (15°– 30°). Punctation of striae, shallow, catenulate and impressed. Interstriae flat, with clavate, golden silvery, recumbent or raised setae.
Legs short and robust covered by silvery-golden scales and rather short, clavate, silvery-golden setae. Femora clubbed. Protibia with two-three acute spines on inner edge, with mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia not sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, robust and short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 66 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 105 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in three specimens.
Paratype variability. No were observed significant differences in paratypes specimens (all females), except in size.
Distribution. See Fig. 139. Known only near type locality Mazzarino.
Etymology. Named from the Latin “ hiemalis ” (wintry) for the season that mainly characterizes the phenology of these species.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting the leaf litter on clay soil, of an olive grove in March and December, at 400–500 meters.
Collections in the other months gave negative results.
Main soil type. Calcaro-Eutric-Cambisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known only from four females.
