Pseudomeira petrensis: Bellò & Baviera, 2011 View in CoL : 35 View Cited Treatment –68; Pierotti, 2013b: 352; Abbazzi & Zinetti, 2013: 91.
Type locality. Sicily, Palermo, Madonie, Piano Battaglietta , 1650 m. ( Fig. 165).
Diagnosis. A medium-sized species (length: 3.25–4.00 mm.) with stubby body (elytra length/width ratio: 1.43–1.58), sub-oval elytra with dense imbricate earth-brown scales here and there paler, belonging to the petrensis group. Within the species group, it is recognisable by elytra little vaulted on disc with spatulate, recumbent (15°– 30°) setae on declivity. Humeri straight. Rostrum sub-conical to the sides with eyes small and convex. Pterygia inconspicuous. Sizes: pronotum (length: 0.80–0.85 mm, width: 0.90–1.00 mm, ratio 0.85–0.89), elytra (length: 2.00– 2.60 mm, width: 1.40–1.65 mm, ratio 1.43–1.58).
Material examined. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label with genitalia in DHMF] // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “S.[icilia], Palermo, Madonie, (b), Piano Battaglietta, m.1650, 16.VI.08 " // [white, printed] “al vaglio, legg. Bellò 2010" " Dodomeira petrensis ( Bellò & Baviera, 2011), det. Bellò 2016 ” (CBE).
Paratypes: 16 females (CBA, CBE, ECO, GOS, HPI, LFO, MTE). Other material. 1 female: “I. Sicilia, Palermo, Madonie , 1600m, 17.XI. 2013, leg. Baviera ” ( CBE) .
Holotype redescription. Female Figs. 21, 21a View FIGURES 21 – 21 . Total length: 3.25 mm. Stubby body and elytra sub-oval. Dorsal vestiture with dense imbricate earth brown scales here and there paler with metallic sheen. Rostrum clothed by earth-brown scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.70), sub-conical to the sides. Pterygia just slightly protruding. Epistome small, inconspicuous and slightly concave. Mesorostrum concave, anteriorly with twelve thin, short, erect setae. Vertex wide and convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.70) with many, clavate, recumbent setae. Interocular space with not visible fovea. Lateral, relatively small, convex eyes little protruding from outline of head. Antenna robust and short with recumbent, golden/silvery, clavate setae. Antenna with ratio 0.72 (scape length: 0.65 mm, funicle length: 0.90 mm). Scape clubbed slightly robust than funicle, curved al basal third and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 10.4.3.3.3.3.3.15; all segments with clavate or widened setae; segments 4–7 pearl-shaped. Club twice wider than funicle, compact, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with earth-brown scales here and there paler, transverse (length: 0.80 mm, width: 0.90 mm, ratio: 0.89), slightly sub-conical but sides sinuate, wider at the basal third and less wide at base of its anterior margin, with short, clavate-spatulate, golden recumbent setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum small and inconspicuous. Humeri straight.
Elytra (length: 2.00 mm, width: 1.40 mm, ratio: 1.43) little vaulted dorsally, sub-oval, clothed with dense imbricate earth-brown scales here and there paler, rounded on sides, wider at the middle, flat suture. Elytral declivity with spatulate setae, recumbent (15°–30°). Punctation of striae, shallow, rather catenulate and impressed. Interstriae with silvery, spatulate setae, recumbent.
Legs short and robust clothed by earth-brown scales and with short, clavate, golden setae. Femora little clubbed. Protibia with four acute spines on inner edge, with evident mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia curved on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with widened golden setae. Onychium curved, robust and short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 83 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 122 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in three specimens.
Distribution. See Fig. 140 View FIGURE 140 . Italian endemic. Known from Madonie Mountains range above 1400 m a.s.l.
Ecology and Phenology. This is a montane species, collected by Berlese or Winkler extractors in late spring, sifting roots of Astragalus sp. and Euphorbia sp. on calcareous soil, at 1400–1650 meters. Adults appear in spring, with a probable life span of some months until autumn, and possibly overwintering.
Main soil type. Vertic-Cambisol ( Rendzina ) (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known from eighteen females.
Chorological relationships. Sympatric with Acallorneuma sp..
