Dodomeira maritimaensis Bellò View in CoL & Baviera sp. n.
( Figures 23, 23a, 23b, 23c, 23d, 23e, 23f View FIGURE 23 - 23 , 42h View FIGURES 42 , 82 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 121 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily , Trapani, Isola di Marettimo (Fig. 164).
Diagnosis. A medium-large size species (length: 3.90–4.35 mm.) with slender body (length/width ratio: 1.70– 1.75) and elongate, cylindrical elytra with imbricate earth brown scales here and there paler, belonging to the maritimaensis group. It is easily recognisable by elytral declivity with thin erect (75°–90°) setae. Funicle thin. Rostrum conical to the sides with with small eyes less convex and pterygia barely visible. Sizes: pronotum (length: 0.80–0.95 mm, width: 0.90–1.00 mm, ratio 0.89–0.95), elytra (length: 2.50–2.90 mm, width: 1.45–1.70 mm, ratio 1.70–1.75).
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “Sicilia, TP [Trapani], Marettimo, M. [on]te Falcone, 20.IV. [20]’07, leg. Baviera” // [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira maritimaensis sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE).
Paratypes. 1 female: “ Sicilia , Trapani, Isole Egadi, Isola di Marettimo, 14–16.V.2006, leg. Baviera C. ”( CBA).
Type specimens are two (all females) and both genitalia have been studied.
Holotype. Female. Total length: 3.90 mm. Body elongate and elytra conical shape. Dorsal vestiture with imbricate earth brown scales here and there paler with metallic sheen. Rostrum clothed by earth-brown scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.70), conical to the sides. Pterygia barely visible. Epistome small, inconspicuous and slightly concave. Mesorostrum concave, anteriorly with ten/twelve thin, short, erect setae. Vertex wide and convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.84) with many, elongate, thin slightly widened apex, erect setae. Interocular space with inconspicuous fovea. Lateral, relatively small, quite convex eyes slightly protruding from outline of head. Slender and short antenna with raised, silvery, thin setae. Antenna with ratio 0.70 (scape length: 0.70 mm, funicle length: 1.00 mm). Scape clubbed, robust, curved al basal third and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle thin. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 12.6.5.4.3.3.3.15; first three segments with slightly widened setae at apex; segments 5–6 pearl-shaped. Club twice wider than funicle, slender, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with earth brown scales here and there paler, transverse (length: 0.80 mm, width: 0.90 mm, ratio: 0.89), sub-conical, wider in the middle and less wide at base of its anterior margin, with short, thin, golden raised setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum small and barely visible. Humeri rounded.
Elytra (length: 2.50 mm, width: 1.45 mm, ratio: 1.70) vaulted dorsally, cylindrical, parallel, clothed with imbricate earth brown scales here and there paler, wider at the middle, flat suture. Elytral declivity with thin setae, erect (75°–90°). Punctation of striae, shallow, slightly catenulate and impressed. Interstriae feebly vaulted with thin setae, erect.
Legs short and little robust clothed by earth-brown scales and with short, slightly widened apex golden setae. Femora little clubbed. Protibia with three acute spines on inner edge, with evident mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia little sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, little robust and quite elongate.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 82 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 121 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in all specimens.
Paratype variability. The only female paratype differs in size and elytra less vaulted on disc and less subparallel sides.
Etymology. Named from “Maritima” the Latin name of Marettimo Island, the westernmost emerged portion of the Mountain Range of the Aegadian Islands, formed during the Upper Miocene ( Argnani, 1987).
Distribution. See Fig. 138 View FIGURE 138 . Italian endemic. Known only from the Marettimo Island, Archipelago of Egadi.
Ecology and Phenology. Collected by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting the leaf litter on calcareous soil, of a maquis in spring, at 250–500 meters.
They are not evident during the hot dry summer because probably overwinter deeper in the soil. Main soil type. Chromic-Luvisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known only from two females.
Chorological relationships. Sympatric with one species of the genus Alaocyba , members of which usually appear in winter, Alaocyba ientilei Baviera (2010).
