Hyatt’s name is not an available name (as it has a fourth name, ICZN art. 45.5). Apart from Von Lendenfeld’s assignment of this to Hippospongia equina var. meandriniformis View in CoL (a misspelling of meandriformis Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864: 33 View in CoL , currently Spongia (Spongia) barbara Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 View in CoL ) there are no other suggestions in the literature. Hyatt was apparently unaware that Duchassaing & Michelotti corrected the name corlosia View in CoL to coelosia View in CoL in the Errata at the end of their book (p. 122). Thus, in accordance with ICZN art. 32.5.1.1 the name must be spelled coelosia View in CoL . The WPD lists Spongia (Spongia) coelosia View in CoL as ‘accepted’ but incertae sedis (see further below). I propose to assign this material from the Bahamas provisionally, but in accordance with Von Lendenfeld’s suggestion, to Hippospongia gossypina ( Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) View in CoL , until it has been re-examined.
