Carex buekii Wim., Jahresber. Schles. Ges. Vaterl. Cult. View in CoL 29: 83 (1851 publ. 1852)
Lectotype, designated in Jiménez-Mejías et al. (2014c):— POLAND. ‘l. pr. Wratislau e manu Wimmer!. J. N. Buek s.n.’ ( M 0124780 !; isolectotypes B 10 0218382!, JE s.n. (two sheets)).
≡ Carex cespitosa View in CoL L. var. buekii (Wimmer) Fiori. Nuov. Fl. Italia 1: 188 (1923)
= Carex banatica Heuffel View in CoL in Verh. K. K. Zool.- Bot. Ges. Wien 8: 222 (1858)
Carex buekii View in CoL was validly described by Wimmer (1852) although most authors had erroneously considered the 3 rd edition of Flora von Schlesien ( Wimmer 1857) as the correct publication ( Soldano 2012). Carex buekii View in CoL was described from the area around Wrocław: “ An Flussufern. An der Ohlau vor Zedlitz, hinter Zedlitz und zwischen Pirscham und Tschansch. Im Walde bei Tschechniz. In Fürstenwalde bei Ohlau (Bartsch).”, from where it was formally lectotypified ( Jiménez-Mejías et al. 2014c). It was named after the German pharmacist Johan Nicolaus Buek (1779-1856) ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976).
The only known heterotypic synonym for C. buekii View in CoL is C. banatica ( Heuffel 1858) View in CoL . It was named after Banatia, a region of the Pannonian Basin, nowadays found in Hungary, Romania and Serbia. Ascherson (1866) was the first botanist to realise that C. banatica View in CoL was conspecific with C. buekii View in CoL . Our search for the original material of C. banatica View in CoL was in vain.
