Lectotype (designated by McVaugh 1956):—Plate 108 on p. 226 in Nova Plantarum Genera ( Micheli 1729: 226, t. 108).

Distribution:—Native to South America, but widely cultivated for its edible fruits. Only known in Congo (Brazzaville) from gardens.

Specimen examined:— Without locality. Jardin d’Essais, 16 May 1965 (fl.), C. Farron 4171 (P! [P05259019]).
