Derivation of name: As a tribute to Raymond H. Bate for his contribution to the knowledge of Aptian ostracods.

Type-species: Batecypris reticularis sp. nov.

Stratigraphic and geographic distribution: Aptian: Crato Formation, Santana Group, Araripe Basin, Ceará State, Brazil (Silva-Telles Jr.& Viana 1990; Guzmán et al. 2022, 2023; this study). Mid-upper Aptian: Alagamar Formation, Potiguar Basin, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil ( Do Carmo et al. 2013).

Diagnosis: Cypridid showing a sub-triangular carapace and a compression in the median part of the anterodorsal region of each valve.

Description: Carapace sub-triangular in lateral view and fusiform in dorsal view. Greater length at mid-height, greater height slightly anterior to mid-length and greater width in the median region. Obtuse anterior and posterior cardinal angles. Compression on the median part of the anterodorsal region of the valves, in front of the mid-length in the dorsal region.

Remarks: The morphotype presented here as the new genus Batecypris had already been recovered by other authors in the Araripe Basin (Silva-Telles Jr. & Viana 1990) and Potiguar Basin ( Do Carmo et al. 2013), respectively identified as Hourcqia ? and Ilyocypris ?. Do Carmo et al. (2013) supports the positioning of this morphotype within the genus Ilyocypris ? due to the poorly developed anterodorsal sulci present in the analyzed specimens. However, in the carapaces illustrated by Do Carmo et al. (2013), as well as the specimen by Silva-Telles Jr. & Viana (1990) and those reported here, this is not a visible feature. The specimens described in this paper in lateral and dorsal view have similar outlines to the representative genera of Cyprididae (e.g.: Pattersoncypris Bate, 1972 ), therefore, it was included in this family.
