Remarks
This species is widespread but not common in rivers at lower altitudes. It is possible to overlook its presence in routine sampling because it usually occurs intermixed in small numbers with the much more abundant S. pseudequinum and the diOEerence in the pupae is not always immediately obvious; in the latter species the central gill tubes are constricted and wrinkled where they join the gill base (®gure 49), whereas there is no basal constriction of these gill tubes in S. lineatum (®gure 51). DiOEerentiation of larvae is di cult unless the pupal gill histoblast is advanced or has reached pharate pupal stage, when removal and spreading of the incipient gill can show whether or not the central gill ®laments are basally constricted. For a note on the spermatheca see remarks under S. (W.) sergenti above.
