Spain references: Doby and Deblock (1955, as hirtipes var. arvernense , report from`Espagne’ attributed to Grenier, p. 274), GonzaÂlez PenÄa et al. (1986), GonzaÂlez PenÄa (1990), GonzaÂlez (1997).

Andalusia records

Authors’ material. Site 23: 8 larvae.

Previous reports. None, but recorded by GonzaÂlez PenÄa (1990) from Sierra Morena adjacent to Andalusia, namely Ciudad Real: Arroyo Cereceda (UH87354 5) and RõÂo Pradillo (UH86352 9), headwaters of RõÂo Yeguas. [A map site for tomosvaryi in Andalusia is given by GonzaÂlez PenÄa (1990: 183) but it is based on Strobl’s (1906) ancient record of` Sim. fuscipes Fbr. Zett. ’ from Ronda: however, the material is lost and it cannot be known to which simuliid Strobl’s record refers, possibly not even Prosimulium .]

Remarks

Identi®cation of our larval material is based on the pharate pupal gill and the shape of the hypostomial teeth. The pharate pupal gill expanded in 10% KOH prior to mounting showed 21 ®laments, this number lying within the ®lament number range 20±26 occurring in P. tomosvaryi ; the row of more or less equally short teeth on either side of a prominent median tooth (e.g. as ®gured by Rivosecchi, 1978) was also characteristic for this species. Site 23 (Arroyo de los Alamos, TF8258), where we found this species, is a shaded and turbulent stream at 350 m in the Serrania de Ronda.
