Type locality. “Kankau (Koshun)” (= Kankau, Manzhou Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan)
Diagnosis. This species is easily distinguishable from the other Taiwanese congeners by having blue or purplish blue elytra. The species is similar to A. piceus sp. n., but differs in the following characteristics: posterior margin of pygidium and 8th sternite almost straight; spicular apodeme unconnected with spicular plates; phallobasic apodeme simple rod-like shaped; ventral phallobasic plates sclerotized.
Redescription. Male (n = 52, Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 A–3H): Elytra varied from metallic blue to metallic purple. Head clothed with yellowish suberect setae on the area from frons to vertex and brownish setae on occiput; pronotal disk with yellowish and brownish suberect setae; elytra clothed with black suberect setae, mingled with yellowish setae near humeri; legs and abdomen with yellowish and brownish suberect setae. Colorations of head, antennae, pronotum, legs and abdomen shows much intraspecific variation. This variation mainly falls into the following 3 types, though there is sometimes overlap between them: head, antennae, pronotum, legs and abdomen yellowish orange ( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 A–3C); pronotum with black markings on disk, large portion of head, antennomeres 3 to the basal 1/2 of 11th, legs in dorsal view black ( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 E–3G); pronotum completely black, head, antennomeres 1 to the basal half of 11th, and legs in dorsal view black ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 H).
Maxillary palpi with the last segment short, nearly triangular, obliquely truncate at apex. Antennomeres 4 to 8 weakly serrate, gradually becoming shorter toward apical segments; 9th and 10th serrate, as wide as length. Pronotum 1.3–1.5 (1.4) times as wide as long. Elytra oblong, weakly convex dorsally, 1.2–1.5 (1.4) times as long as width, widest at basal 1/4, finely set with setigerous punctures throughout.
Pygidium (Fig. 5A) with posterior margin almost straight. Eighth sternite (Fig. 5B) trapezoidal; posterior margin almost straight. Spicular fork (Fig. 5C) with short intraspicular plate; spicular lobes weakly colored and almost membranous; spicular apodeme 2/3 as long as the total length of spicular fork, unconnected with spicular plate.
Aedeagus in fully inflated condition ( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 E–6F) orthogonally curved ventrally at the base of CM in lateral view; CM cylindrically swollen, slightly dilated basally thence constricted at base; phallus cylindrically swollen. Tegmen (Figs 5D–5E) with phallobase oblong, nearly half length of tegmen, roundly pointed at apex; phallobasic apodeme in ventral view elongate, slightly dilated apically from apical 1/3 and incised at apex, almost straight in lateral view; ventral phallobasic plates sclerotized; phallobasic struts divaricated from apical 1/3. Phallus (Figs 5F– 5G) longer than tegmen, sinuous in lateral view; phallic plates uncinate at apex, densely with bi- or trifid denticles from middle to subapices of ventral margins.
Female (n = 40): Similar to male, but the apical margin of 7th sternite slightly and triangularly incised at middle. Pygidium ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 I) with posterior margins roundly projected posteriorly; pygidial struts elongate. Eighth sternite ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 J) with apical margin roundly projected apically. Pronotum 1.3–1.6 (1.4) times as wide as long. Elytra 1.2–1.6 (1.4) times as long as wide.
Taxonomical notes. According to the original description of A. violaceipennis , this species is well distinguishable from A. sauteri by virtue of having fine punctures on metallic purple elytra (Schenkling 1912). However, these characteristics are well within the range of the intraspecific variation of A. sauteri , and we therefore synonymize A. violaceipennis with A. sauteri .
Measurements. Male (n = 52): BL 7.0–11.5 (9.1) mm, PL 1.6–2.5 (2.2) mm, PW 2.2–3.9 (3.0) mm, EW 3.3– 5.7 (4.5) mm, EL 4.5–7.5 (6.1) mm. Female (n = 40): BL 6.9–10.5 (8.6) mm, PL 1.6–2.5 (2.1) mm, PW 2.2–3.5 (2.8) mm, EW 3.2–5.1 (4.2) mm, EL 4.7–7.0 (5.8) mm.
Distribution. Taiwan (New Taipei, Hsinchu, Yilan, Nantou, Hualien, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taitung, Pintung).
