22. Celmisia hectorii Hooker (1864: 135) View in CoL

[as C. hectori View in CoL , corrected here according to ICN Art. 60.8, but also see rec. 60C.1 ( Turland et al. 2018)].

Type:— NEW ZEALAND. Middle [South] Island, Otago, Mt Brewster, alt. 5–6000 ft., J. Hector & J. Buchanan 53 in Herbarium Hookerianum (holotype K 882078 [image!]).

Notes:— Cheeseman (1914: plate 98) commented that the species was first collected by J. Hector & J. Buchanan in 1862 in a different locality, Mt Alta (dividing range to the west of Lake Wanaka), and that in the following year it was collected from Mt Brewster by Sir Julius von Haast. According to Cheeseman (Op. cit), J.D. Hooker in the protologue accidentally omitted the locality of Mt Alta, and then the Mt Brewster locality was credited to Hector and Buchanan. Cheeseman (Op. cit) also mentioned that Hooker amended the mistake in 1867 in his second part of the Handbook of the New Zealand Flora; however, there is no mention of Celmisia hectorii in Hooker (1867). Despite Cheeseman’s argument, the material at Kew states “Hector and Buchanan, Mt. Brewster, 5–6000” and has a draft of the original illustration by J. Buchanan (WELT 1992-0035-2279/22).
